Painless Learning for Great Public Speaking

TED Talks reminds me a little of a book I read decades ago… Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. As I read that book I kept thinking, yes, interesting idea – and another. When I finished, I thought ok good pointers but will it make any difference? Then I played someone who I had never won against in dozens of opportunities and I beat them.

Bobby Fischer’s book was one of the first popular books I read that used programmed learning… stepping the reader through a series of painless exercises. I’ve also seen that technique also used in a book that teaches math by setting up the problems faced by Euclid, etc. and giving readers enough clues so they too can reach their own aha moments.

While TED Talks doesn’t use programmed learning, it is very painless reading, packed with lots of good ideas. You may not come away and be able to deliver a TED Talk right away but you will come away with at least several new ideas on how to improve your ability to get your message across in group settings.

Anyone who has seen several TED Talks knows there is no one way to deliver the talks but the book has plenty to say about what generally doesn’t work and what does. I’ll just hit on a few that struck me as helpful:

• Don’t give a sales pitch. The speaker’s job is to give to the audience, not to take.
• Sometimes it takes a little demolition before changing minds. Example: In ancient societies, a third of men died violent deaths. Modern media plays up violence because that’s what sells.We've changed. After crushing their stereotypes, now you can go onto your points.
• Take your audience down your own path of discovery. By asking them to join the process, they get more involved.
• Make sure your words and images work together.
• Don’t leave a slide up once you are finished with it. Better to put up a blank screen to avoid distraction.
• Transitions in Keynote should be kept simple. Cut when shifting to a new idea. Dissolve when slides are related. Dazzle distracts.
• Most TED speakers memorize and then practice so much it sounds spontaneous.
• Wrinkled clothes telegraph you don’t try. If you don't care, why should they?
• Breathe deeply, take your power pose. Be sure to hydrate.
• Keep your notes by your water. When you grab a drink, you can quickly glance at where you are. Notes can be there if you need them. Hopefully, you won't.

Some books are easy to imagine exploding into narrative form from an Author's lifetime of work. Then there are the books that probably took years of cajoling from well intentioned friends before they finally come to fruition. This book seems like the latter. In a quiet signature style, TED founder Chris Anderson takes readers behind the scenes of some of the most well known moments from the iconic TED stage and what it took for those speakers to get there. Before TED Talks, the idea of a 17 minute non-fiction talk going "viral" with millions of views would have been unheard of. The point this book makes over and over again is that this is the real power of a great talk in the right moment. It can turn companies around and inspire people like nothing else. The premise of delivering an actual TED talk may seem like the most intimidating way to try and improve your speaking skills. The vaunted position TED talks take in our consciousness could make it seem like an unapproachable ideal. Yet reading this book, the one belief that comes through loud and clear is that being a powerful speaker is a skill that is within reach for anyone. Rather than sharing a secret formula for an ideal TED talk, Anderson offers tips and techniques that TED speakers use, but which could be applied for anyone. Aside from having delivered 2 TEDx talks myself, I also currently teach storytelling and speaking at Georgetown University. I will be recommending this book to my students - and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an actionable and entertaining book on becoming a more persuasive speaker as well.

Not Just For TED Talks...But For Anyone Who Talks!

An excellent guidebook for anyone who wants or needs to design and deliver more effective presentations of any kind. Written in a casual, conversational style by Chris Anderson, it's like having a presentation coach in a book. Even though I've been a professional speaker for years, TED TALKS provided me with a number of valuable tools, tips, and techniques that I can immediately put into action to improve my presentations. And, as an added bonus, the author brings his lessons to life by pointing us to his online video "playlist," making it simple for us to locate the real-life TED Talk examples he references within the book. Highly recommended.

Accidental Project Manager

I'm a lawyer turned businessman. As I've discovered, project management is synonymous with managing a business. EVERYTHING is a project. So I've been doing lots of project management reading. Lots of great materials out there but perhaps none as practical as this one (I admit to not having read every one-- though I must be getting close). Authors Brown and Hyer have offered an accessible guide for managing projects of all types. The books shows how to ask the right questions at the front end, clearly define the project, involve the team in planning, and apply just enough of the technical tools to suit the situation. I especially like the way they combined traditional methods, team-based tools, and leadership dimensions of project work - no other book seems to do this so effectively. Definitely a valuable addition to my executive library. I keep it close.

WOW! Excellent book

Two wishes; that all academics would use this book in their project management classes, and that all project managers would read this book. If you only read one book on project management it should be this one. It starts and ends with the real life appreciation that while there may be a project "manager" that in reality project management is a team effort, formal or informal. All the elements of project management are here and the textbook type presentation is ideal for the person new to project management or the seasoned manager wondering what went wrong, or right, on their current project. The book is, cover to cover, filled with wise advice and observation. "Many people who are starting out with software tend to believe it will manage a project for them.", "ask stressed and busy project contributors for percent complete estimates, and you might wind up with a team mutiny", "the student syndrome is the tendency for project team members to delay the start of their work until the last minute", and "laboratory research has found that when group size exceeds five, decision quality deteriorates". None of this is off-the-cuff advice. All is backed up with extensive footnotes and convenient chapter-end bibliographies that make it easy to delve deeper into any topic. A nice thing about this book that makes it almost unique in its field is that it is written in a very easy to read style and despite being comprehensive it is short, only about 300 pages. For people who came to project management through operations research classes, as I did, this gives you the 90% of "how to do it" you missed. For those who came to project management because they were discovered to be good at getting projects done despite the odds this is the formal background you are missing. All project managers new, experienced, and wannabies should have this on their desk as a primary reference.
As an aside one of the authors also wrote an equally good book on cellular manufacturing, Reorganizing the Factory: Competing through Cellular Manufacturing.

A Fantastic Look Into The Personal Life of Jimmy Page

I'll start off by saying I am a massive Led Zeppelin fan. Jimmy Page is the reason I started playing guitar and I have nothing but the utmost respect for the man.
I originally thought this book would be an in depth and personal view on his life and career. I'm happy to say I was wrong but oh so very right too. Instead of Mr. Page writing about himself, the vast majority of the book is filled with pictures that span from his early childhood until late 2008 or so. Jimmy will give context as to what is going on in a series of pictures but the real story is the pictures themselves, the majority of which I had never seen before. Each page was a joy to look at and I think the book made a much bigger impact by allowing us to live through Page via these pictures than the written word ever could.
If you're a Led Zeppelin or Jimmy Page fan you owe it to yourself to pick this book up. The book itself is very high quality too, the hardcover feels great and the individual pages are thick and have a great feeling to them as well.

Amazing Visual History of Jimmy Page, Alpha to Omega

I was quite stunned when the delivery man arrived today with this package. Imagine my happiness when I opened it to discover the much awaited (ordered several months ago) Jimmy Page tome. This was more than I expected, pictures and notes from the very beginning of Jimmy's venture into the musical world (St. Barnabas Church, Epsom), the early adventures with NC & the Crusaders, Yardbirds, Led-Zeppelin, the Firm and beyond. The imagery from the beginning to the end is exhaustive and stunning. I am quite amazed by the great array of photographs that I've never seen before and even happier to have them annotated by the man who was there at the moment. Jimmy Page: Guitar God, Rock Icon, Cultural Phenomenon and still the most influential guitarist of all time. Thank You Jimmy for this compilation.

Massive book!

This book is beautifully done. Jimmy really went all out on the scale. It's massive! The interior layout has loads of large photos. The textured cover and solid binding are also an added plus. I especially like the look of the gold etched ZoSo symbols on the covers. It's well worth the cost. I'd definitely recommend it to any Page fan. You won't be disappointed.

Not a good choice for my son...

I loved this book until we got to the end... it just proved to my son that he should be able to sleep in my bed every night! He is entering a phase in which he's scared of everything at night, so I bought this for him to try to help get him past his new fears. I hoped that it would help him feel comfortable and safe in his own bed. I wish I had read through it myself before we read it together! The empathy that he feels for Little Mouse validates his concept that his bed is definitely not the place to be at night! It was a very sweet book, but a bit unpractical for parents with children who have nighttime fears.

Woe is Little Mouse, who keeps hearing strange noises whichkeep him very WIDE AWAKE. He implores Big Mouse to share his big bed,but Big Mouse knows how hard it is to sleep next to a wriggling tot sporting cold paws. "No!" is his firm reply, followed by patient reassurance that the noises Little Mouse hears are nothing to be afraid of. As the night progresses, Little Mouse tosses and turns, constantly pestering Big Mouse to reconsider.
Diana Hendry tells a story that is simple, while at the same time simply charming. Jane Chapman caps off the tale with colorful art, full of the kinds of details that make a story worth re-reading--over and over again. Children will delight in finding the extraordinary uses mice can find for seemingly ordinary household items. The ending is satisfying and comforting. A perfect bedtime companion, THE VERY NOISY NIGHT is well worth the investment.

Tale of a Persistent Mouse who Perseveres-Our Favorite Book!

About two months ago, I purchased this book for my 3 year old, who is a very persistent little person. She loves this book because she likes to sleep in her parent's bed when she can't get to sleep, just like the Little Mouse in this story, who in the end, after asking many times, "Can I sleep in your bed?" finally gets to sleep in Big Mouse's bed. To my daughter, the moral of this story is that persistence pays off!
I love the book because the story is funny and very "real" to us: tired Big Mouse looks like this tired Mom some nights. My daughter and I also read this book at bedtime almost every night because the illustrations are the BEST of any book we own. They are gorgeous, full of color -- they splash across the pages, and are so creative, making the Mouse home a magic wonderland. I think my daughter would find it hard to get to sleep in the Mouse home, because it looks like such a fun place to play and explore. This book is a winner!

Useful and Interesting

I gave the book a 4 out of 5 because it provides useful information in the advancement of Human Factors. In my opinion, it is organized well and although some chapters are long, they won't necessarily put you to sleep. For someone who wasn't familiar with the subject prior to reading this book, I found it particularly interesting. The information in it is current but not the latest and greatest because of the subject matter covered. Apparently this edition is miles ahead of it's predecessor but I never read the previous one.

I recommend it if you want to enhance your knowledge of the subject, as it covers various distinct areas of the human factors in aviation.

Not a bad book in general for studies, BUT it is written poorly and very boring/hard to read. I'd suggest a different book for studying Human Factors in Aviation.
