About the Author
Vanessa Steel was born and brought up on the outskirts of Birmingham in the 1950s. She survived her childhood ordeals and developed a psychic gift (as a young child she foresaw the assassination of Kennedy in 1963 oblivious to who he was), and started working professionally as a medium. Great Book!

I've read this book 2x now, and I still think it is an amazing memoir. I guess I have a strong stomach because it wasn't a difficult read for me. It was actually difficult for me to put the book down! I'm very happy that Steel was able to FINALLY have the life she deserves after everything she has been through, but I still can't understand how she can just move on with her life and still talk to those who abused her and let her down. I realize that in the time period this was set it, things like that would be shameful to talk about, but still...I have a difficult time accepting it.

I read almost all of the terrible reviews and saw that most people seem to think something is wrong with her mentioning her psychic abilities...I'm not sure why though. One person even said she would never have bought the book if she had known. As a young child she was badly abused mentally and physically, so how is it surprising she speaks of instances where she has an out-of-body experience? I know I have had moments like that when I have fallen off of a horse or had something frightening happen, so it is perfectly plausible that she experienced the same thing, but more intense. I don't think there is anything wrong with her mentioning any of this, I feel it only adds to the story of her horror, making it seem as if her mother literally drove her insane (although, I don't think that was the case). I really enjoyed this book a great deal, but it bothers me that NO ONE really tried to help her get away even though they knew something was going on...perhaps if it were a different time, her childhood could have been salvaged.
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone!

Engrossing in a sad way...

This is one book I read through in a single day. It was terribly sad, but also terribly all too real. There are people in the world like Vanessa's evil step mother, and their victims all too often cover up the horror and dread they face each day, fearing an even greater punishment if they tell anyone. And worse, when they do break their silence, they are not believed by the very people who should protect them. I'm glad Vanessa found happiness at last, although she did take care of her insane step mother til the end and even facing death, this crazy evil woman would not give Vanessa the answers she sought. This book is a testament to the will of the human spirit to survive.

I had to wonder, however, if the memories of foretelling the future weren't Vanessa's rewriting of her memory (not intentionally) and the zoning out in a daze sounded like disassociation to me - a precursor sometimes to multiple personalities. The visions and imaginary companions were a little schizophrenic. Not denying that premonitions and communication with spirits do exist, however, the human mind will conjure up whatever it has to to survive. It would be understandable, under the circumstances, if this is how she dealt with things, to keep her sanity (sort of).

None of that matters, however, as this book is a great look inside the more dysfunctional of families (although I'd faint if I met a *functional* family.) I'm a RN who works with families in crisis when all the secrets and skeletons fall out of the closet and you have to wonder if these people are putting you on. Sadly they are not. This sort of thing does exist and happens more often than you'd think.

Nightmares!!

I don't know what possessed me to by this book!! You know this stuff happens every minute of every hour of every day, but God bless those who are able to survive & bear witness against these animals that call themselves "parents". If you don't want kids, there are plenty of ways to achieve this goal. If you're too ignorant to know, then ask somebody!! There are too many people in this world that would love to have children, but for whatever reason, can't ( I'm one of them )...
Then you have monsters like the ones in these books...its a darn shame

Useful Training for ASE Preparation

I used this book as my primarily preparation to take an ASE test for the first time. I had already taken automotive classes at an Education Cultural Complex (part of San Diego City College District), then worked in the industry as an auto mechanic for two years. There were no exact matches to questions in the book that actually showed up on the ASE exams. By using these practice tests as a guide to see where I was weak worked out pretty well. When I had problems answering questions, I would resort to my text books or other sources to beef up my knowledge. I felt that this book worked for me using that approach to prepare for the exam. I also felt that my knowledge as a mechanic increased. I passed the exam easily. I don't believe that this book alone is the silver bullet to pass an ASE exam. It is a great tool to use in order to see where your knowledge stands. I even purchased practice exams from ASE and only one exact question showed up on the test. There are some quality control issues such as questions that don't have the correct illustration. There is one or two like that per book.

The edge you need to pass the test

The delmar books are very useful. The most useful of any test prep I have found. I have now taken 4 ASE tests and used a Delmar book for each one. Each test I passed on the first try. The practice questions are worded and structured very closely to that of the ASE test questions.

I like the fact that for every question, you get an explanation of why the answer is what it is, and why the wrong answers are wrong. This is very helpful when grasping the material. Passing an ASE test is not about memorization. Is about understanding the principles of auto repair. If you have no experience or understanding of the basic principles of auto repair, this book will probably not provide the edge you need to pass. But if you do have experience, and understand the basics, this book will probably be the edge you need to pass.

Good review book, poor teaching book.

I would agree with a previous reviewer that this book is not for someone who is new to automotive repair and looking to actually learn how to work on automobiles. There are absolutely NO pictures which go along with the information, so again, if you have not worked on certain parts of an automobile before it may be really difficult to visualize what the information is explaining. In this case there is another test prep book called Motor Age which does a much better job of explaining the material and providing pictures to go along with the information.

The good thing about this book is if you have worked on automobiles for sometime and are comfortable with the parts you may come across then this book may be superior to the Motor Age book because there are more test questions. Also, next to each test question the Task List Item is shown. This is very helpful because if you get a question wrong you can easily refer back to the appropriate part of the book to review the information.

So again, if you have worked on cars for a long time and do not need any sort of visual aid to help you prepare for the exam this book is good. If on the other hand you want a more detailed explanation for each Task List item and visual aids the Motor Age study guide is superior.

Okay, so I just took the ASE A4 test today and this book was actually quite valuable because of all the test questions. I highly recommend using this book and the Motor Age books together. The numerous practice tests included in the book were really worth the purchase.

Canyon Ranch 30 Days to a Better Brain FOREWORD
Most people realize how precious their health is only when they are on the precipice of death. Usually it happens in a doctor’s office or in an emergency room. But I’ve learned that it doesn’t have to be this way, and I’ve dedicated my life to passing on this message.

I’m eighty-five years old, and I still work hard, feel good, and honestly enjoy life. But for my first fifty years I had a health profile I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I was an asthmatic child who was told not to exercise. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure by the time I was twenty. By age twenty-four I suffered from duodenal ulcers, and by my mid-thirties I had diverticulitis and a hiatal hernia. In my forties my doctor told me I was starting to get osteoarthritis.

When my father died, I was nearing fifty, and besides all of my other health concerns, my weight was out of control. I asked my wife, Enid, to book me into a “fat farm,” where I planned on staying for a week to help get my life back on track. That week turned into a month, and to this day I credit it with saving my life.

Within the first ten days, I had a remarkable transformation: I became the athlete I always dreamed of being, jogging at a rate that put me at the top of my age group. After three weeks, I begged Enid to come join me. “I’ve found what I want to do with the rest of my life,” I told her. “We have to share this.”

My miraculous reversal of health is the idea from which Canyon Ranch was born. Enid and I built our Tucson resort in 1978 as a place where we could live the healthy lives we wanted, and where we could share what we’d found with anyone who cared to come to us. Unsurpassed 35 years later!

As a child, I acquired every book on horror movies I could set my trembling hands on. At its height, my collection numbered in the 40's. Most I've sold or given away. But Everson remains. Essentially, it boils down to the caliber of his writing and the care he took in his criticism.
Never engaging in genre worship of the sort that F J Ackerman engendered, Everson loved film as much as anyone. Nevertheless, he wouldn't avoid confronting the faults of the canon's greatest classics. He took Universal to task for choppy editing in their 1925 classic, "The Phantom of the Opera". Mamoulian's 1932 "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" , according to Everson, "doesn't have the thoughtfulness and dignity that it deserves."
Even today, as many of the films in "Classics" become available on DVD, I'll pull the dusty old tome from the shelf and revisit what Everson has to say. Karloff's "The Walking Dead" is coming soon...

Invaluable resource for the classic horror film fan.

Having owned this book since the first printing in 1975, I have used it as a guidance tool to track down and watch over the past 29 years the excellence that is horror films outlined in this book. The late author clearly has a firm grasp of the element of a successful horror film; i.e. lighting, timing, musical score (or lack thereof), delivery, etc., and contained within this volume are critically acclaimed classics as well as little known "nuggets" worth searching out, such as "Murder in the Zoo," "Strangler in the Swamp," and the last of the great horror films, "Night of the Demon." Since the book's release, many of the titles have become increasing accessible both in video and in DVD, which allow for a greater enjoyment by the classic horror audience. You won't find any of the latter day slasher, gore-fest "movies," but you will find a careful synopsis and examination of each film contained in this volume. My recommendations to watch after reading this book are: Night of the Demon, The Uninvited, The Devil Doll, and The Man Who Laughs (silent).
