My contempory Spanish lit class at Vanderbilt read this play, and I thought it was a truly masterful piece of work. Aside from the contemporary political themes touched upon, this play also serves as a marvelously crafted religious alegory; Ignatius serves as a strong Christ-figure, and is just as persistent in his mission to point out the foly and blindness of others who will not accept it. En la ardiente oscuridad" adresses a universal theme, our "sentimiento tragico de la vida," to use Unamuno's phrase. This play is for anyone who is tempted to deny his or her own blindness; it is also for anyone who struggles daily with the conflict between comfort and truth; it is also for those who love the teachings of Christand his quest to reveal spiritual blindness wherever he found it. Read this play.

The Burning Darkness

I'm reading this play (in Spanish) in my Pre-AP Spanish class. It's really quite moving, and I think that it's easy to read as long as you've taken at least three years of high school Spanish or Spanish is your first language. Unfortunately, I don't know how good the translation is, but the original is extremely powerful. I'd definitely recommend the play for older readers.

About the Author
For the past two decades, J. H. Hyun has worked with numerous global Fortune 500 companies in various capacities. Heard it All Before, But Not Like This

I'm an aspiring professional blogger, my company is called A Novice With Moxie and my blogs are Through the Lens of Kimberly Gauthier and Adventures in Blogging. When people realized that I was taking the business of blogging seriously, some cheered me on while others felt the need to take on the role of Devil's Advocate.

Outswimming the Sharks didn't share much that was new to me, I've learned to deal with the naysayers, but I do enjoy the metaphor of Swimming with Sharks and enjoyed JH Hyun's writing. The book is an easy read and provides inspiring examples of people who have overcome their own sharks.

One thing that I walked away with is that I've been a shark in someone else's life and I'll take care in the future to watch my own tendencies to take on the role of Devil's Advocate.

Just what I needed

I was feeling a little burnt out and looking for some motivation when I stumbled upon "Outswimming the Sharks." This book helped me realize I was spreading myself too thin and focusing on the wrong goals, hurting both my family and career.

Another lighbulb-learning from your "sharks" instead of wishing they'd dissapear. This was exactly what I needed and wish it would have been available 10-20 years ago :)! I finished the book feeling refreshed and refer to a few key passages I have written down daily. It's given me a much needed recharge and a new outlook. I highly recommend this, not your typical self-help book!!

It is an intelligent and well thought-out discussion of Java design patterns, and if you dont know what a design pattern is then this is an excellent way to find out. It is also an interested discussion of object-oriented design. About the Author

Eric Freeman recently ended nearly a decade as a media company executive, having held the position of CTO of Disney Online & Disney.com at The Walt Disney Company. Eric is now devoting his time to WickedlySmart.com and lives with his wife and young daughter in Austin, TX. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Yale University.

Elisabeth Robson is co-founder of Wickedly Smart, an education company devoted to helping customers gain mastery in web technologies. She's co-author of four bestselling books, Head First Design Patterns, Head First HTML and CSS, Head First HTML5 Programming, and Head First JavaScript Programming.

Bert Bates is a 20-year software developer, a Java instructor, and a co-developer of Sun's upcoming EJB exam (Sun Certified Business Component Developer). His background features a long stint in artificial intelligence, with clients like the Weather Channel, A&E Network, Rockwell, and Timken.

Kathy Sierra has been interested in learning theory since her days as a game developer (Virgin, MGM, Amblin'). The quality is evident!

Head first books tend to polarize readers I feel: you either love the unique methodology of the books or you hate it. They are extremely visual, often hilarious, and require you to do various activities to engage more fully with the content. This is similar to the traditional teaching methdology in mathematics: motivating example -> theory -> example -> your turn. This I find as a teacher, is a strong (pedagogical approach) methodology, particularly if you can make it fun, interesting and engaging. If you have no experience with patterns, I recommend this as a good Intro to the MasterWork by the GoF-> Design Patterns, Elements of reusuable Oject-oriented software IBSN: 0201633612. From personal experience, I found after reading the Head First pattern, I could pick up the GoF book, look at the same pattern and understand it with virtually no problems.

I have no hesitation recommending this book, if you like the Head First way, championed by Kathy Sierra. If you don't like apparent frivolity (I say apparent because there is an ulterior motive to this frivolity-> engagement. Basically, cognitive psychology says the more deeply you engage, the more you learn, retain and understand), then maybe this isn't for you.

Slight criticism-> you may notice this book uses some 'old' java syntax like using iterators for collections like arrayLists, rather than the new for (object j: collection) and no generics in sight in declaring such arrayLists: they use ArrayList name=new ArrayList(), not ArrayListname=new ArrayList(); But these are 'very' minor criticisms. Likewise, it's usefulness as a comprehensive reference like the GoF book may be questionable. But then, if you approach it as a learning tool and a means to mastery rather than a reference, this shouldn't be an issue (you can always resell it when you're done!).

Anyway, in conclusion, two thumbs up. Read it, do the work, enjoy it and you'll be well on the way to the GoF's MasterWork in design patterns. All the 5 star reviews don't lie! This is a five star book.

As an aside I recommend, in addition to this and GoF, reading Streamlined Object Modeling- patterns, rules and implementation- ISBN: 0130668397 for higher level OO system design (OO system architecture). And just so you don't fell excluded from the vernacular (and didn't know this): GoF=Gang of Four (Gamma, Helm, Johnson, Vlissides)

Insufferably cute, but a very good intro nonetheless

Unlike a lot of people, I don't care much for this book's 'irreverent' sytle. I think it masks some shortcoming in the examples it uses. But once you get past that, this is still the best introduction to object-oriented programming that I have read.

HFDP is not just about design patterns. It's a great introduction to object-oriented programming. The book does a great job of explaining the benefits of OOP over traditional procedural programming, and it explains OOP very well in terms of the most commonly used design patterns.

Now for the bad news. The examples are rather lightweight. They do a pretty good job of illustrating the concepts presented, but the code is in no way real-world. For example, if you are looking for which pattern to use to organize a UI (the 'Mediator', 'State', and 'Composite' patterns), with sample code, you won't find it here. The patterns are discussed, but they are used to create quacking ducks (really).

While that's by-and-large a shortcoming of the book, the code is so simple that non-Java programmers (like me) should have no problem using the book. The code samples are very basic, and should translate with little difficulty into .NET languages such as C# and VB.

One other item of note--this book contains a pretty good chapter on Model-View-Controller architecture, which seems to bedevil a lot of people. If you can get a handle on MVC, then you can pretty much do OOP.

In short, this is probably the book I would recommend as an intro to OOP. If you are under the age of 30, you will probably like the examples of quacking duck simulators and java-enabled gumball machines. For everybody else--it's worth looking past this book's insufferable cuteness if you are getting started in OOP.

The best software design book money can buy

Probably the most useful software design book that I know of. One big caveat is that you must appreciate the style it's written in. If you are someone who prefers absolutely cut and dry, more academic style writing, grab the design patterns book by the gang of four, "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software."

That said, this book covers not just those design patterns, but many object oriented programming principles that are the foundation for good OOP design (dependency inversion principle/composition over inheritance, etc.) It also goes through why exactly those principles work and simplify maintenance, and better enforce the open/close principle.

While all of this may seem simple enough and stuff we all did in our Bachelor's program, I would still recommend it as a reference guide to go back over even as an experienced developer. It's fun, easy to understand, and carries a ton of value in a small space.

Save $$, get this version instead of the newest

I got this book instead of the most current version in order to save some money. It is pretty much identical to the current version. Same layout, words (for the most part) and pictures. My professor didn't really use the book, the book was just a study tool. Cells haven't changed much since this book came out, so why pay a billion dollars to get the same quality with the newest version? I got an A in my biology 1010 class with this book.

Brief, colorful, generally easy to read

I used this for an intro to environmental studies class, focusing on the biological aspects of life.

It was definitely a difficult class to labor through, but this textbook did help a bit. Filled with charts, brevity, and specifics, I was able to understand the concepts well, despite not having much experience with biology.

Not bad, and since this textbook is out of edition now, it's a cheap alternative if you want to just brush up or is just curious about biogloy.

Fun book that answers many questions.

It is a rather fun book. It answers many questions left by the games and also turns one thing from the games on its head. The characters were mildly flat but well developed and it was very well written. Can get a tad gruesome at points though.

Translations of Santeria songs & lots more - very impressive

This is a huge, impressive book that provides a wealth of knowledge most of which you can't find in print in English anywhere else. It has background on Yoruba religion and Santeria, bata drumming in Cuba and America, and translations of many many songs. Also photos, etc. Some people will argue with some of the translations, but nobody can say this book doesn't add enormously to what's published in English on what has been an esoteric & oral tradition.

ORIN ORISA - a MUST have

To anyone that practices within the Ifa'Orisa community, this book is a jewel. It is not often that one stumbles upon a book rich with knowledge & standing strong in it's research & presentation. Mr. Mason has taken his years of practice & translated these beautiful songs to call the Orisa. I can only say that this is probably one of the BEST books I have ever seen on the Orisa tradition! Mr. Mason is to be thanked time & time again for his amazing contribution of this community! ASE!

finally a clear, cohesive compendium to the songs and chants of the Orisha tradition and well-researched vital information on the tradition of the sacred bata drums / for someone like myself, an Ocha initiate who lives in Asia, thousands of miles from Africa, Cuba and the US, this is a resource godsend --
