Second language acquisition among Mormon missionaries?

I am the author of three CD courses to learn spoken Mandarin Chinese as well as someone who has studied various methods of language acquisition for many years.

Missionaries must learn languages in order to minister to those they seek to convert. The Mormons have been doing this for much of their modern history so, naturally, I eagerly looked forward to reading this book entitled Second language acquisition abroad; the LDS missionary experience.

There are a few problems with this book. The major one is that only one of its eleven chapters really tells us about how Mormon missionaries are trained in foreign languages and even this one is not too specific. In fact, the bulk of the book is dedicated to how they lose their competence in languages or language attrition.

To be fair, there are a few other chapters in the section on language acquisition but, unfortunately, they are mainly statistical in nature. I want to know how they learn, not statistics of the learning of single words which one chapter discusses.

In addition, the two bibliographies at the end of the book, which are labeled comprehensive, are notable in the amount of actual LDS foreign language instruction material which they omit. Hardly comprehensive.

I want to understand how Mormon missionaries learn foreign languages.

However, this volume does not deal with the reality of how this is accomplished.

very effective guide

I never knew that tilapia could be cooked in so many ways. I know a little about tilapia cooking and how delicious tilapia can be when prepared and cooked. This book has even made me more interested in preparing new dishes. Simple recipes means simple preparations and that just makes cooking more fun and enjoyable. It does not require a lot of complicated instructions. This book has been a very effective guide in cooking this amazing fish that is loved by many people.

First of all, I don't like fish but the husband wants to eat more of it so I tried the Cajun dill recipe with salmon. It was the best fish I ever had, Also, the book was nicely edited with each recipe on one page (not running together like some recipe books) with clear instructions. I'll be checking out more of this writer's books.

An important book for any Christian who wants to understand their faith

This is most likely one of the most important books on salvation that has ever been written, outside of the Holy Bible itself. Freely drawing on multiple scriptures, it is a ringing tribute to the Protestant faith, and clearly argued in less than 100 pages. Why is it not available by the publisher, I am at a loss to explain.

Great Novel

I came across this nice cover as I was browsing and started to read it. It sure is one of those books that you couldn't put down. I really enjoyed reading it. It's not as gory or as scary as I would thought it to be. This book seems to be inspired by Dante's works with referring to circles of Hell and a demon's love for the Child of Light. The ending was quite unexpected and a nice touch.

I thought it was a pretty good story, but what I really enjoyed was the character developments and how real they were. I'm glad that I got a chance to read it.

Circles was a book I couldn't put down. I started reading and had to stay up till midnight to finish and find out what happened. By about the 2nd chapter I was hooked. The end of chapter 7, with the coffee, made me laugh out loud. Circles is not nearly as dark as you might imagine it would be due to the subject matter. However, it is a bit scary and probably not totally appropriate for those under 8 or 9. Reading with your younger child is a good idea because there will be questions they have that need answering to avoid a nightmare or two. I don't mean that in a bad way, it really isn't scary in and of itself, more the ideas it can make us think that are scary. Our imaginations are much better at scaring us that any written word. I enjoyed the character development, the fact that it was set in Seattle, and it's different than any book I've read in a long time. I loved the very last page too. It left me wanting more story...in a great way. I wasn't left hanging, just wanting. Buy the book, it's totally worth it!

Until this book I had never been interested in Dante's Inferno, the story comes from such a unexpected direction and pulls you to the very depths of Hell.
She takes our current time and pulls you back and forth creating yet another interpetation of the struggle of good verses evil.
I can't wait for the next book from Jae Holt!
