Excellent effort...

First off let me say that the swingers genre isn't really my personal cup of tea however this book does have a wider appeal and is almost a bona fide pure "wingers" title. One of the really great strengths of this author is her ability to write characters as realistic living breathing people that seem to leap off the page as if you know them. She writes people better then any other author in the genre and this book showcases her talents in the area to the maximum. The first two thirds of the book are rather a slow burn however it's here where much of the interesting and quite complex character development occurs and generally I think the book as a whole benefits from it. Let me say that a few of these characters are not really very likable or redeemable (one of them is a complete !#^&*) but there is no question that this realism adds substantially to the narrative. The narrative itself might seem rather straightforward but there is some hidden nuance in it for the reader to ponder that says a lot about modern marriage and society. In some ways this is a rather serious book in parts for this author but the sexy isn't skimped here either. The last third of the book is where things ramp up and the author pulls out all stops to bring us some genuine erotic heat. All up a fine effort in a rather difficult genre from a very talented author. Highly recommended for both swingers fans and HW readers.

Torn - Good?

Started really slow, but ends like cayenne peppers in your mouth.
I would have liked a bit more connection between the married couples. It seemed they were disconnected from each other with non common bond or intimacy, marriages of connivence. Gary and Lexi were the most conflicted couple and he needs to grow a pair and she seems aloof and incompatible with him. I almost stopped a third way thru but then the author finds her second wind and the finish is an eruption of energy and lust. Still not sure overall.
I do like this author and she writes the good stuff, this one a bit off the game, but still way better than most.

An Erotic and Fun Read

I have enjoyed Kirsten McCurran's work in the past, especially "Because He's Watching" and "Hot Dates 2." This novella is edgier than those books, but still intensely erotic. The plot involves two couples who have been friends for some time, Gary & Lexi and Maggie & Adam. Events are set in motion when Gary loses his job, and Lexi persuades him to become a stay-at-home dad so she can reenter the work world and escape what for her has become the stultifying world of at-home mom. Gary, of course, is completely at sea in this new arrangement, and Maggie begins to visit often, giving him the support and self-confidence he needs. The two of them grow closer, and McCurran does a nice job of showing their complimentary personalities, which are in marked contrast to their spouses' more hard-driving personalities. Not surprisingly, Lexi and Adam begin to share after-work drinks, although their relationship doesn't feel as organic as Gary and Maggie's. Inevitably, the cross-couple closeness becomes more than simply friendship, and the four characters have to find a way to either embrace the complexities or see both marriages threatened. McCurran negotiates these complexities well, and the plot, in general, feels both fresh and inevitable. Personally, I found Lexi and Adam to be often manipulative and off-putting, but McCurran doesn't let them become stereotypes. The characters are all nicely nuanced for a novella, and in the end I found their stories to be enjoyable and fun. It's not McCurran's best, but she is certainly in the top tier of authors in this genre.
