The Diary of Elisabeth Koren 1853-1855From Brand: Vesterheim, The Norwegian-American Museum

Else Elisabeth Hysing, an upper-class Norwegian woman, married Ulrik Vilhelm Koren on August 18, 1853 and, almost immediately afterward, the couple made the perilous Atlantic Crossing to America, where her husband had been called to serve as the first Lutheran pastor west of the Mississippi. The diary Elisabeth kept chronicles that crossing and the first five years of their life in America, eloquently capturing the stark contrast between the comfort and privilege of their life in Norway and the rugged rigors of pioneer America. She describes traveling the Wisconsin River by dugout canoe, crossing the Mississippi River by ice, and traveling by wagon through snow. She also captures in all of its homely detail the daily life of a pastor and his wife on the Midwestern frontier-the cooking, the laundry, the monotonous diet, the clumsy furniture, and the hard-working neighbors and friends that made up a pioneer community. Elisabeth faced both the adventure and the tedium head-on, emerging as the kind and accomplished mistress of Washington Prairie Parsonage until her death in 1918.

Reads a bit like a book
By Mom to Many
If you are a genealogy buff you might enjoy the perspective this book gives of the life of an immigrant. Elisabeth was pretty affluent as immigrants go. But, her story shows her living through hard beginnings. She writes during the journey across the ocean. Her living conditions were far better than those in the belly of the ship, but she does make reference to their conditions. Upon arrival she lived with others who were willing to take them in along the way until they reached the town where they planned to settle. After their arrival she was dependent upon others taking them in. She left everything she knew and had to begin again as a newly wed young woman. Her husband was gone a lot and she was left with others in their homes. She speaks of living in a small cabin with blankets drawn across the space to separate the space into rooms. There were domestic annoyances and instability that came with her situation.
I enjoyed reading her experiences. She felt some frustration as she faced her challenges, but for the most part she met things with a pretty good attitude.

Coffee & Conversation: A Time Capsule
By ananda01
As someone interested in food history, this book was a gem. Elisabeth is astonishingly good at capturing the details of her life as she travels from Norway to Iowa, and pays particular attention to what she is able to eat on the ship and on the frontier, and what she thinks of it. All the quirks of trying to eat on a ship while the dishes are tipping over, to the little annoyances and squabbles of the people around her are painted in detail, yet the whole thing flows like a novel. Elisabeth's earnest devotion to coffee & conversation made it clear that not much has changed in 150+ years in the Norwegian-American Lutheran communities.

Norwegian Immigration 1850s
By Gunny
Book was in as good a condition as stated. This book came to me from Missouri and I am in Texas. It is HOT down here in August but I was surprised this book wasn't burning up it go here so fast! Book was put together by Mr. Nelson and published in 1955. It was actually mostly written by Elisabeth Koren, wife of Reverend U.V. Koren. He had his own take on events sometimes which is folded into the narrative. It is often a funny read as she make comments about her husband (the Reverend) that would not be much out of place in today's concepts. She describes her husband as not his usual self without his coffee. The book is ripe with Norwegian (original "diary" was written in Norwegian) sayings and words. Keep in mind, this couple were of the upper crust and sailed First Class to America. Despite their higher status in life, Elisabeth seemed to have an appreciation for the lower class Norwegians - but also a dislike or fear for the "Yankees" not understanding their ways, and not too sure of the Customs she encountered. It is an outstanding commentary on life in about the 1850s, from leaving Norway by ship, crossing the Atlantic, to arriving in New York to going to Decorah, Iowa. My family history cites him as "Rev. V. Koren" and in the book, I find that he is often called Vilhelm or simply just "V". Now, before you go pronouncing the "V", the Norwegians had no "V" sound in their language. So you may see the correct Norwegian spelling of Vilhelm but they would have pronounced it as the English speaker would say "Wilhelm." So, my driving reason for this book was a taste of life of the 1800s, a possible connection between the Korens and my forbears. Regardless, it is a good read and spells out the trials of life of their times. Another interesting piece of information, when a child cried "ma", that child was not referring to their mother by the use of the word "ma" which had a whole different meaning amoung the Norwegians.

PRINT TOO SMALL
By Katherine Brown
July 8 2006

I am fifty eight and have just started to play piano via the

chord method and I have perhaps a dozen fake books.

The print in this fake book is entirely too small and difficult

to read, making it a chore to use it. I should have

known better - it has 500 plus pages and oftentimes two songs

per page.

For those of you who have difficulty reading small print - I

wear reading glasses - stick with the Hal Leonard fake books which have approximately 200 pages and 100 songs. My favorites are: Easy Fake Book, Broadway Fake Book, First Fake Book, Simplified Fake Book, Easy 60s Fake Book, Classical Fake Book (new edition). They are easy to read and enjoyable. An improvement I would suggest would be a spiral binding.

The bigger the book, the more songs, the smaller the print.

I understand that this book is for all audiences, but I suggest that about 70% of the songs were minor hits.

'If you are looking for a book that provides you with a quick overview of geriatric medicine, focuses in key points only and is small enough to fit in your white coat this is the ideal book.'

GKT Gazette, 2001

'An excellent book overall. I would have used this book regularly during my elderly care attachment for reference when around the wards and clinics and for reading prior to tutorials.'

5th year medical student (Southampton)

Lucky Peach Issue 4From Lucky Peach

Lucky Peach is a journal of food writing, published on a quarterly basis by McSweeney’s. It is a creation of David Chang, the James Beard Award–winning chef behind the Momofuku restaurants in New York, Momofuku cookbook cowriter Peter Meehan, and Zero Point Zero Production—producers of the Travel Channel’s Emmy Award–winning Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.

The result of this collaboration is a mlange of travelogue, essays, art, photography, and rants in a full-color, meticulously designed format. Recipes will defy the tired ingredients-and-numbered-steps formula. They’ll be laid out sensibly, inspired by the thought process that went into developing them. The aim of Lucky Peach is to give a platform to a brand of food writing that began with unorthodox authors like Bourdain, resulting in a publication that appeals to diehard foodies as well as fans of good writing and art in general.

What's inside?
-David Simon, creator of The Wire and Treme, remembers his father via pickles and cream.
-Jonathan Gold and Robert Sietsema talk Teletubbies in Kansas City.
-There's a “Choose Your Own Adventure”–style hunt for tacos through Texas and California.
-Plus stuff from Harold McGee, Anthony Bourdain, Elvis Mitchell, and more!

Better to order individually from Amazon
By Bonnie
I do not recommend subscribing to this. The journal is cool, but sort of long-winded. Additionally, I swear, the next issue always has at least three "corrections" to recipes from the issue before. Cooking out of this magazine proves to be a waste all around. I think if you are using it because you loooooooooooove Chang, you will most likely be happy. Other than that it is a little too pretentious for me, but I only have a minor love of food, I'm not one of these crazy foodies.

Also, of the four issues I had subscribed for last year, I only received one. At issue three, I cancelled and requested a full refund because I realized that the third issue was out and I hadn't gotten one since the first. They did reimburse me, so I appreciated that. I settle for taking these out from the library.

Managing Outdoor Recreation: Case Studies in the National Parks, by Robert E. Manning, Laura E. Anderson

The popularity of outdoor recreation and ecotourism continues to grow worldwide. However, there is little systematic information on how to manage outdoor recreation in ways that protect park resources and the quality of the visitor experience. This book develops classification systems of outdoor recreation-related problems and management strategies and practices and combines them into a series of matrices that can help guide park and outdoor recreation management. The book then uses a series of case studies drawn from the U.S. National Park System that illustrate a range of successful management approaches that can be applied globally. The book concludes with a series of principles for managing parks and outdoor recreation.

Review
"Manning and Anderson (both, Univ. of Vermont) have written a timely, pragmatic, and useful work, a must read for managers of all lands visited by tourists/outdoor enthusiasts, students in land management programs, and policy makers. The well-informed park user would also find it valuable. Part 1, divided into five chapters, provides a conceptual and methodological basis for the book. Chapter 1 is a concise conceptual framework. Following chapters survey human impacts on parks, and examine, evaluate, and apply management practices. Part 2 contains 20 succinct case study chapters that illustrate discrete management problems and remarkable success in the context of national parks. These include mitigation of trail use by millions of visitors and overuse of backcountry campsites in Acadia and on the Appalachian Trail; management of light, noise, and human waste problems Chaco, Muir Woods, and Mt. Whitney; successful handling of vegetation and habitat issues at the National Mall and at Katmai; and resolving visitor transportation and safety issues at Zion and Yosemite. The case studies are pithy, appropriate, and results-oriented. Chapter 26 in part 3 presents lessons learned through 36 management principles. Appendix A provides a toolbox of park problems and management solutions. Appendix B is available on a companion website. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries." (E. J. Delaney, formerly, National Park Service Choice)
