With this new edition, we have endeavored to retain the positive features of earlier editions while incorporating new information within the profession. In writing the seventh edition of this text, we have been committed to changes that reflect the realities of education at the turn of the century. Thus the text includes increased attention to many contemporary themes in education, including inclusion, collaboration, cooperative teaching, strategy training, the importance of phonological awareness, holistic perspectives, home-school collaboration, ethical issues in the education profession, transition, and positive educational outcomes.

The title, Strategies for Teaching Learners with Special Needs, reflects the generic focus consistent with the previous editions of the text. This scope reflects our belief that appropriate teaching methods are rarely category-specific but instead represent good teaching strategies that benefit many learners. As the title of the book acknowledges, methods that are effective for students with various disabilities as well as those at risk are best selected from the broad domain of effective instructional practices and then matched to individual needs.

While this text is designed for the realities of programs for learners with diverse exceptional needs, we are also committed to the belief that all learners with disabilities need a comprehensive curriculum. Therefore, the discussion of curricular design, the clarifications within content chapters, and the further attention to transitional and career concerns emphasize that differences among subgroups of students with special needs must be reflected in differentiated programming.

This edition is a major revision of previous editions, but, like its predecessors, it reflects our commitment to equipping educators with appropriate and practical methods for teaching. Our assumption is that learning can be considered a direct result of the quality of instruction. Effective education must be based on a systematic program that has been organized and structured to maximize the progress of individual students. The goal of the book is thus to present proven approaches that will foster educational success.

As we have tried to integrate the old and the new, we continue to be inspired by the memory of Ruth Ann Payne and James E. Smith, Jr., close friends and coauthors of the first two editions of the text. Those who were fortunate enough to count themselves among their friends know that they lost a significant piece of themselves when Ruth Ann and Smitty died. We hope that through the successive revisions of this text we have continued to communicate their commitment to effective education for students with special needs.

Could use older edition

This 8th edition could easily be replaced with the 7th edition for a lot less money. The chapters contain basically the same information AND the 7th edition comes with a cd with strategies and the 8th edition does not have any extras. This is a paperback book and for the money, you would be better off saving it and getting the 7th edition.

Magic School Bus series

Our granddaughter, 5 1/2 years, loves the Magic School Bus series. She finds the in-depth exploration of the subjects (the senses in this book) fascinating. The books are packed full of facts about the subject and are written at a level 5 to 6 year-olds can easily understand and relate to. She will look at the pictures by herself after we finish reading the book to her. She especially liked the book about the senses as sight, sound, smell, touch and hearing are issues she easily experiences in her daily existence.

finally, it's OK to be serious and science-geeky!

This is a great, almost un American book in that kids are told that it's OK, even wonderful and wondrous to be science geeks, be curious. Love the Frizz when she says "take chances, get messy, make mistakes," and encourages her students to explore. In a society that elevates sports and violence for boys, and beauty and cattiness for girls, this series stands out for encouraging gender neutral intellectualism and academic achievement. My geeky 5 year old can't get enough, having finally found fictional characters that reflect her and encourage her. Factual substance-wise, I as a 40 year old have learned tons.

Review of Prince 2 study guide
By Frustrated only a little now
This book is so much easier to understand than the official Prince2 Manual. It gives good examples that you can relate too and some hints on how to use the official manual. It covers everything in great detail so your not missing out on anything. I find myself turning to this now when I am stuck on a question and think I might actually stand a chance of passing the exams with the help of this book. Fantastic prep for the Foundation and Practitioner exams.

I picked up this title following the purchase of the official manual and passing the Prince2 exams title. Between them it was all the study I needed for both exams, following up with some practice exams at the APGM site.

The study guide presents the information in a different format and level of detail to the manual which gave me a strong grasp of concepts, some of which I hadn't picked up on in the first read through of the manual. It also provides guidance on how to prepare and manage yourself during the exam. It boosted my confidence and I'd highly recommend anyone studying for the exams picks this up at to supplement their learning.

B for the book quality.

I need this book for my course in Unit Operations and have been using it for about a month now. I think the book would be improved for learning the concepts by giving a little more background information - if often seems like it goes from point A to point C or D without mentioning point B. Also, it's very annoying that it references equation numbers from earlier in the book without reprinting them so that you have to flip back to remember what that equation was.

This book is good for a capstone course where you only need to review material, but it is not great (even borderline useless) for classes that focus on one or two of the sections, such as fluids or mass transfer, as it's likely your class will go into more detail than this book. With that said, you definitely want to purchase this book for use down the road instead of renting it. The international edition is much cheaper however.

Although he remained a nationalist committed to the old ways, Kazan called on the shogunate to learn from the West or risk disaster. He strove to improve the agricultural and economic conditions of his province and reinforce its defenses, but his criticisms and warnings about possible coastal invasions ultimately led to his arrest and exile.

Frog in the Well is the first full-length biography of Kazan in English, and, in telling his life's story, renowned scholar Donald Keene paints a fascinating portrait of the social and intellectual milieus of the late Tokugawa period. Richly illustrated with Kazan's paintings, Frog in the Well illuminates a life that is emblematic of the cultural crises affecting Japan in the years before revolution.

We don't usually know that much about extraordinary painters, thus is most fortunate for English speakers to read about Kazan's life's journey.

good for inspiration not so good for recipes.

I have already reviewed this cookbook, but I have now made just about every recipe. I have some helpful hints! When Ella calls for buckwheat, it is the light buckwheat, not the Bob's red mill variety. My children laughed for quite sometime when instructed to " take out ( the buckwheat focaccia ) when golden brown". It was mud brown to begin with. So it is going to lighten in the oven? ;). Most of the recipes work with half the recommended dates. The girl has a serious sweet tooth. The quinoa pizza crust , almond chia bites ( with less dates),spicy roasted chickpeas, berry scones with coconut cream , quinoa fritters, sweet potato brownies, zucchini noodles with alvocado pesto, lentil bolognese, all work pretty close to directions. The majority of the recipes in the book do not. From poor seasoning ( 3 tbsp dried herbs in bread.:( to bland and fall apart ( oat bars) it's a very frustrating cookbook. Most of the recipes are done better on other blogs. i was also disappointed in recipes for date pur�e ( dates and cinnamon... actually it is much better with lemon juice and vanilla powder) , Nutella, roasted veg, baked apples, hummus, polenta, quinoa ....snore. I wish she would have added a little creativity to them if added. As is, I use it primarily as ideas to create my own recipes, which is not a bad thing. Inspiration is worth a few dollars! Overall, I applaud her simple cooking style and primarily healthy ingredients. I hope that her next book has more recipe testers so that I can have more success with it.

There are a handful of food / lifestyle blogs I follow and the Deliciously Ella Blog is one of my favorites! As a brief back-story, the author, Ella Woodward was diagnosed with a rare condition called Postural Tachycardia Syndrome at the age of 19 which left her bed ridden, exhausted, with heart palpitations and when no relief was found through convention medications; she looked to changing her diet to be a whole food, plants based diet which did indeed alleviate her symptoms.

The good:

The great thing about all this is Ella is self taught, so, if like me you are not the world's best cook - no worries as these recipes are largely uncomplicated and easy to follow. You do not need to go wild and buy a bunch of kitchen gadgets though honestly a good blender and good processor do lend well to many of these recipes. Also a lot of her recipes use basic foods that are easily found, and though there are some ingredients the average cook may not have in their pantry (Nutritional Yeast, Maca, Cacao, Baobab powder to name but a few ) there are often substitution or the ability to omit such ingredients. The beginning of the book features a pretty comprehensive guide to building your pantry as well as a guide to the properties of many of these ingredients; and this follows through in each section.

Though I have tried many of her recipes from the blog., it was great to finally have her recipes accessible in one spot. The book is organized into sections that highlight the ingredients : Grains, nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, vegetables , fruit followed by a smoothie / juice section and a guide to her eating mantra along with resources. I also liked the fact that she added personalization to the book detailing her story at the beginning .

There were a lot of new recipes here that I had not previously seen on the blog ; so I was happy to get so many new recipe ideas. That said, I spotted several dishes I have made in the past such as the Chia breakfast pudding, the coconut porridge (which is delicious and great pre workout) the spicy roasted chickpeas and the raw brownies. All were simple and tasted great! The steps are simple and minimal and do not require precise cooking skills; and its really easy to follow.

The bad:

The only issue I have found consistently with the recipes, is sometimes they lack seasoning or a depth in taste. This could be due to the fact that she is not a professional chef or it could be a Brit thing...I am British and growing up there found beyond curries (which oddly British people enjoy very spicy and bold) people tend to hold back on seasoning and spice. This came through in many of the things I have made such as the cannellini soup and the black bean chili which was too obscured in taste by tomato paste ; and I found myself having to add more of the given seasonings, or add different types of spice / herb to give it any flavor at all. So far my husband has not been impressed with any dish so if you have someone with a bold palette you might want to taste carefully before you serve and adjust seasoning to taste.

The other thing to note is this dish is rather dessert /snack heavy but missing balance with enough main dishes that contain a protein element. For example chick peas, potato wedges or cucumber rolls are sides or snacks but not really a main dish; there are a lot of breakfast choices, or sweet snacks along with smoothies, sides, dips etc . I personally really liked the mix of recipes but it's worth nothing to top heavy sweet element if you are looking for more in the way of savory or main dishes.

Finally for those that like their cookbooks traditional: Breakfast then lunch, dinner and snacks, you might struggle with this as with the recipes being sorted by ingredient type there is little rhyme or reason what to expect , for example turmeric fritters and risotto are followed by porridge which is then followed by scones and cookies . It is honestly a little hard to follow and hence my reason for 4 stars not 5 .

That said, as a fan of the blog, I am excited to finally have this cookbook. Like her blog, the pictures are stunning and plentiful ; and there are a lot of new recipes in here I am excited to try! From a home cook to the home cook makes these recipes attainable for us all , bringing healthy, sometimes, raw, always plant based, recipes to the masses; and yes as a parent, I can attest to the fact that the kids will enjoy many of these recipes too and with their simplicity, can even join in making them! A great book, just wish it was a tad more organized!

I enjoyed Ella's blog so was excited to get the book. I wonder though who edited this book and if all the recipes where tested. Some of the directions aren't very clear - for example cook zucchini and broccoli until "perfectly done" no mention of high/low heat - how long. Another example is the chia breakfast pudding - consisted of blending a banana with other ingredients into a liquid - adding chia seeds - soaking overnight - the liquid turned brown as stuff with bananas if prone to do. Just not the most appealing combination - next time i will make with other fruits though, recipe is not a total loss. Also i find somethings are hard to achieve without a vitamix-style blender, even my cuisineart food processor can seem to really get dates ground up. But like some other reviewers said there are some good ideas. I did enjoy most of the recipes I have tried.
