There is a crisis of leadership in the world today. That may not be news to you. All you have to do is read a newspaper, watch the nightly news, or scan the Internet to see that the lack of good leadership is one of the central problems in our world.

Yet, books on leadership abound. So why this book? Why another book on leadership? Our reason is this: the book you hold in your hands is a different type of leadership book. We have read many of the books that are out there on leadership and watched as the crisis in leadership in all parts of our culture has continued to grow. We realize that plenty of people are devoting themselves to stopping this deterioration in leadership. They have written books and produced leadership seminars, claiming to have the answers for changing leaders. These books and seminars cover management techniques, personality traits, building trust, building teams, and improving coaching for performance. These approaches are not bad, but we believe they miss the root cause of the issue. We believe the majority of the leadership offerings available are treating the symptoms of the leadership crisis and not the underlying disease. Our book is here to help all of us who are motivated and ready to treat that disease.

We Have a Sick Patient―and the Patient Is Not Getting Better

Most of the leadership books and seminars available are synonymous to giving the patient Robitussin� to control a cough. That is not a bad idea in and of itself. We can even argue which cough medicine may work best at controlling the cough. But the issue we face is not really the cough. What we are dealing with is PNEUMONIA! The Robitussin� may help control the cough in the short-term, but the patient is not going to get better.

Corporations spend $50 billion a year on leadership training and development and that number continues to grow. There are more leadership books than ever available for any aspiring or current leader to read. But leaders are not getting better. In a survey of over 14,000 leaders and HR professionals conducted every two years since 2009, Development Dimensions International (DDI) found that the effectiveness of leaders in business has not improved from 2009 to 2015. In fact, despite the increase in spending on leadership development, only 1 in 3 people believe they received value from the leadership training they got at work. Plus, only 15 percent of leaders in the survey rated their company’s leadership bench strength as “high” in 2015. Even that was a decline from 18 percent in 2011.

The results are in: What we are doing to develop leaders is not working! We are treating the symptoms and ignoring the disease.

One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Let’s stop treating a pneumonia patient with cough medicine! Let’s treat the underlying cause of the cough and the other symptoms that go with this disease.

In leadership, the symptoms may be trust, poor communication, goal setting, employee turnover, coaching skills, or dysfunctional teams. But the underlying disease, the main issue that does not get adequately addressed, is CHARACTER. We are practicing leadership and developing leaders without an adequate consideration for character. To change our own results and to change the results of leadership development books and seminars, character must be at the foundation of every effort, or else we will keep missing the underlying cause of 90 percent of all our leadership woes.

We believe that the Habits of Character that determine your strength of character as well as ours flow from two critical habits: courage and humility. Without courage and humility, the other critical habits we unpack in this book―integrity, duty, selflessness, and positivity―will continue to be well-meaning platitudes instead of character-changing behaviors.

Simple Truths Simply Presented

If you are like most leaders, you are overwhelmed with the demands of work and home life. We are not delusional and believe you have hours upon hours to wade through an academic treatise on leadership. So we did not write one. This book is designed so you can read a chapter and put it down. There is a free online character assessment available at ( URL) so you can evaluate which chapters you want to dig into and which ones you can read once and move forward. Or, you can read our book straight through on a long weekend and then return to the chapters you want to dwell in. Gripping read that will inspire you to be a Leader of Character and move away from complacency!

This is a very powerful book--one that evokes strong emotions and pulls at the heartstrings as you reflect on the great leaders in the book and in your life--leaders set apart by their character. The authors are able to articulate the six habits--Courage, Humility, Integrity, Selflessness, Duty & Positivity--and relate gripping, real-life examples, while asking critical questions that make you dig deep and want to do away with complacency. We must leave our comfort zones and get to work (on ourselves)! The Andersons' compelling examples and questions are so insightful as you carefully study each habit. The nuggets of wisdom apply to all areas of leadership in our homes, schools, businesses, etc. Leading with character is in short supply these days, and the effects are devastating, so we must strive to be Leaders of Character in our daily walk, and this book equips and inspires you to do just that.

My heart was full of gratitude as I thought back over the Leaders of Character who have poured into my life, and I can't wait to say thank you with this book.

Powerful, concise, encouraging and timeless!!!

In an age when "Winning is not everything, it is the only thing," victory without virtue leaves the souls of the victors hollow and is destructive to the civility of its community. This extremely powerful and astonishingly compact manual highlights the importance of character development in leadership and hinges on two ageless concepts:
-The theoretical principle that failure of leadership is first and foremost "a failure of character."
-The practical principle that you need to "do what you want to become."
Many of the ubiquitous resources for leadership development focus on equipping driven executives with the tools and techniques to accomplish the vision and goals of their organizations. While necessary, this is frequently insufficient to bring about lasting positive change and accomplishment in the life of the organization, team members and perhaps most importantly and unappreciated, the life and character of the leader. The "unexamined" life of the leader may lead to goals and methods that while successful in the short run may be revealed as harmful or destructive to all with the passing of time.
The theoretical premise that failure of leadership is first a failure of character is authenticated by history and the fact that virtue is the value that is most frequently and forcefully tested in the public square as well as the private life of the leader. The acknowledgement and understanding of this premise make this book self-selecting for those willing to take this "road less traveled" in leadership but I believe will reap untold rewards personally as professionally.
The practical principle that you "do what you want to be" is fleshed out well with exercises that lead to habits that are proven and foundational to becoming a great leader. Sometime in our early twenties we are all leading (influencing) somebody (kids/family, friends, employees etc.) and someone is watching......all the time. Congruency and coherence in our behavior is the "coin of the realm" for authentic leadership and can't be faked or hidden. It is frequently on display as we are called upon to manage the moment or crisis de jour. The development and consistent display of worthy behavior is only possible by training beginning with the small things-our habits. Humble confidence of the leader and by the led is exclusively acquired by sustained performance-particularly under pressure. The Andersons' excel here in supporting their message through encouraging, relevant and practical stories of experiences garnered in different but connected arenas over many years.
I particularly enjoyed and appreciated the historical perspective and references as well as the practical approach taken for development. This is a great book that I commend highly and without reservation to aspiring leaders of all ages. Bravo Andersons! Well written and most importantly......well lived!

This book is a great read for leaders at all levels of an organization. The ability to take the principles straight from the book and apply them to your everyday life at work and at home is extremely valuable. I am already using specific parts with junior leaders to help "top-grade" the cultural norms of my company. Transforming positive thoughts into action in the workplace can be challenging. My classmate Dave and COL Anderson have broken down the idealistic values of a strong character and made an inspirational guide for us to be better leaders.

Amazing book! Never knew there were so many ways to "tie a tie"!

To tell you the truth, I really never realized that there were so many ways to "tie a tie". Going to show this one to my husband and my sons, I think they will be as surprised as I was. My favorite is the Eldredge, going to have them try this one first and then have them work their way through the book. All I can say is that my guys are going to look handsome the next time they "suit up"!

After a brief run down on the history of cravats and ties (which I liked a lot- never apologise for presenting history Mr Melrose ;) ) the author explains a few styles of tie knots you can learn to do. There are detailed instructions and diagrams with the whole process explained step by step.

Easy to understand format and easy to read as well.

About the Author

Jesmyn Ward grew up in DeLisle, Mississippi. She received her MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won five Hopwood awards for essays, drama, and fiction. A Stegner Fellow at Stanford, from 2008-2010, she has been named the 2010-11 Grisham Writer-in-Residence at the University of Mississippi. Her debut novel, Where the Line Bleeds, was an Essence Magazine Book Club selection, a Black Caucus of the ALA Honor Award recipient, and a finalist for both the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award and the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award.

Haunting, emotional novel

Fourteen-year-old Esch, who has just found out that she's pregnant, is simply trying to keep things at home together when she and her family learn of the hurricane that is about to hit their home in Bois Savage, Mississippi. Esch's father, a man who spends most of his time drinking, is concerned about the hurricane and tries to get she and her three brothers to board up windows and get the canned goods together in preparation. Her brother Randall begins this process, her brother Junior tries but is too young to do much, but her brother Skeetah is too busy nursing his pit bull fighter, China, back to health after the birth of her puppies. As this family struggles to pull themselves together, the hurricane becomes the backdrop for all the trials they regularly face in day-to-day life.

Salvage the Bones is unlike any novel I've read before. It is so honest, so raw, and at times so painful that I wanted to close the book and run away, but ultimately I was deeply moved by this story. Esch and her family crawled into my heart and their struggles were so palpable that I wanted to reach through the pages of the book and lift them out.

This book is not an easy read. It broke my heart a million times over. China, Skeetah's pit bull, is a fighting dog and as a person who loves pit bulls and has some very close family and friends who have pits as pets, the whole dogfighting business makes me extremely angry. So it was not the best for me to be reading about people fighting these precious, intelligent, loving, sweet animals. This was probably the most difficult aspect of the book for me, although the family does experience the actual hurricane and that portion of the book was hard to read too. Just know that while this story is not an easy one to read, it is certainly rewarding in the end.

Salvage the Bones elicited so many emotions in me as I was reading it. I was so frustrated by Esch's father's inability (or unwillingness) to take care of his family properly. Esch essentially raised her youngest brother, Junior, on her own after their mother died during his childbirth. I was so angry at the boy who got Esch pregnant as he didn't care for her at all and was, in the most clear and simple case of this I've seen in fiction, just using her for sex. I was heartbroken and mad about the fighting dogs. But mostly, the book made me feel an overwhelming sadness, the overwhelming feeling that this family just could not get it together, that things would never turn around for them. Their situation was just so upsetting, so heartbreaking, that I couldn't help but feel despair while reading about it. In fact, toward the middle of the novel there is a dogfighting scene, at which point I burst into tears and didn't stop crying until the end of the book. It affected me that much.

Salvage the Bones is an excellent, haunting novel that brought me to tears. Not much about this book is hopeful or happy, but there is a glimmer of something there at the end that makes it all worth the journey through this family's pain. This novel absolutely broke my heart, but at the same time I can't help but recommend that you read it too.

Salvage the Bones is as raw and real as a hurricane

Salvage the Bones may be Jesmyn Ward's first novel, but what a novel.

Each character is as alive as any ever put to a page, from the dog, China, and her dog fights, to the father, and his inability to cope as a widowed father of four. It's not a pretty story filled with flowers and perfumes, but a story of poverty and strength, hope and love, climaxing as the winds and waters of Katrina send the family into the swirling waters and howling winds to find their own salvation from the storm.

Just like it seemed to all of those who survived the Storm, the days leading up to it were bigger than life, filled with the little things that made life normal as well as preparation for the storm's arrival. Just like reality, no one expected Katrina to deliver the blow it did. From Esch's pregnancy, their father's accident, the dog China and her pups, and the tragedy of youth, each character colors the tale and brings it to life.

No one knew when the storm came that it was going to have the raw power it possessed. Caught in the attic, the storm surge rising, the reality of potentially drowning in their own attic grasps their attention, and in a desperate bid to find safety, a hole is smashed through the roof, and their escape is plotted. It's not without risk, and it comes with loss, but the family all make it to their temporary haven.

It's a powerful story,but its not a pretty story. It ends in the chaos and confusion of the first post-storm days after Katrina, with food and water in desperate shortage and yet it finds the grace and beauty that the best of humanity possesses. It has a real-ness about it that is rare, and the book is one of the best reads I've had in a long time.

I highly recommend it.

captures what it's like to be a teenage girl

"Salvage the Bones" is set in rural Mississippi, the summer of 2005. The whole novel leads up to the explosion of Hurricane Katrina, but it focuses on two parallel story lines: Esch and China. Fourteen year-old Esch has been the woman of the house, caring for her alcoholic father and brood of brothers, since her mother's death years before. She is also pregnant. Esch dreams constantly of the baby's father, an older boy as gorgeous as he is unattainable. I felt that Ward captures what it feels like to be a teenage girl, and in love, quite convincingly. Sensitive yet matter-of-fact, intelligent yet foolish and impulsive like any teenager, Esch seems like a real girl to me. I would love to read a sequel about her. Most of the other characters were quite likable and convincing as well.

China is the snow-white pit bull whom Esch's brother Skeetah treats as lovingly as his own child (even as he trains her to be a fierce fighting dog). China herself has just had puppies, and the novel explicitly links the fates of Esch and China, which I suppose says a lot about what it feels like to be a poor black girl in the South. This book reminded me of both "The Color Purple" (published in 1982) and "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (published in 1937, and definitely my favorite of the three), and I found it kind of sad that Esch's life shared so many similarities with those of Celie and Janie. She struggles with both the same kind of relentless poverty and the same abuses on account of her gender.

One false note I felt the author struck was in endlessly alluding back to the myth of Medea and Jason, which has the effect of jarring the reader out of the story. As a teenage girl you are experiencing everything for the first time, things that (in your mind) no one has ever experienced before, and trying to tie Esch back into ancient Greek myth feels somehow false. This story and its characters are rich enough on their own.

Much More Than Advertised

There is much more to "The Selfish Gene" than is advertised, even in the most glowing of its reviews. In fact, I (not a biologist, but fascinated by evolution ever since "dinosaurs" and the first high school biology course) have been vaguely aware of this book since its initial wave of rave reviews many years ago, but never bothered to read it because as it was advertised its theme(s) always seemed pretty obvious. But something recently piqued my curiosity again, not sure what that was now, and after reading the prefatory material online I finally decided to take a look.

After reading quickly through the first 3 chapters, it became apparent that there was a great deal more underlying the book than was overtly presented, that it was not just an over-extended, over-simplified, over-popularized, metaphorical presentation .... but rather that its metaphorical treatment is painstakingly faithful to an elaborate, closely-reasoned, even rigorous, scientific underpinning. At which point, I stopped reading and began again from the beginning, first the prefatory material, then from page 1, this time more slowly and more carefully, taking care to appreciate and reflect on all the markers of the underlying basis and their implications.

This is a wonderful book, even beautiful in many respects, from its initial beginning (at the "beginning") with the purely chemical/physics "evolution" of the primordial soup (cast suggestively in the form of biological evolution); to the consequent continuity with the creation of "replicators", elementary "survival" cells, genes, and the beginnings of life forms; to the important distinction between genes and individuals, as genes and their "survival vehicles" (the first cells and "us", for example); to the nicely extended notion of "gene" itself, required by underlying scientific reality; to a clear presentation of the conflict between Darwinian and "group" selection and evolution; to the nature of evolution, operating (in distinct ways) in terms of both genes and individuals, aka both genes and "their" survival vehicles, aka both chemical/physics and biological evolution; to genetic kinship and its very special selective and social implications; ... ; to the delicious End Notes to the 1st eleven chapters, which provide much supporting and fascinating material.

"The Selfish Gene" goes on to clarify not only its expressed subject, the nature and genesis of Selfishness and Altruism, but to make clear the error, scope, and source of various (idealistic, and often political) arguments and ideas centered around group selection fallacies, including the genesis of (ill-conceived) "group-beneficial", cooperative "functions" vs. (individual) evolutionarily stable strategies (ESS) and kinship. It also sheds light on many other commonly-posed questions, among them: the fundamental "reason" for the 50:50 sex ratio (despite the number of different breeding strategies observed for male competitors); the driving source of the natural variability upon which (continuing) evolution depends; the variety and shadings of competing "strategies", which can be both conceived and advantageous, clustered around a given regard (partly on account of environmental inconstancy), one incidental, unintended but important, implication of which is that this is itself an evolutionary driving source of the natural variability upon which (continuing) evolution operates; .... and NOT so commonly posed: that "In its long journey down the generations therefore, an [ANY] average gene will spend approximately half its time sitting in male bodies, and the other half sitting in female bodies", and thus genes will generally contribute positively to both sexes, sometimes in very different ways, and that, indeed, many "purely male / purely female" effects pass (unexpressed) through many bodies of the opposite sex; and much, much more.

Beautifully written and packed with wonderful insights, "The Selfish Gene" is not only well-worth the read, but will amply reward the reader in proportion to the thoughtfulness and reflection with which they read it. In fact, there is so much food for thought in the story-lines and examples (e.g., the fig, "lichenization", and organelle endosymbiosis) provided in "The Selfish Gene", that one must often stop and consider, at length and at leisure, the questions which it provokes or which Dawkins rhetorically poses.

I will, however, amend Dawkins' wonderful characterization of "us" (Preface to the First Edition, p. xxi): “We are survival machines --- robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes. This is a truth which still fills me with astonishment. Though I have known it for years, I never seem to get fully used to it.” ...... by grafting it to my own previous synopsis, with the result:

"We are Conditioned-Reaction Engines [built on Basic Senses + Unconditioned Reflexes (among them innate Kantian "Categories", instincts, emotions, etc.)] built as Gene-Survival "Machines" [genetically "programmed" to serve the "interests" of our genes] = Pavlo-Kantian Conditioned-Reaction, Darwin-Dawkins Gene-Survival Automatons.

Brilliant and thought-provoking

Brilliant and thought-provoking. It will move you to see the world in an entirely new way. Far from being depressing or sad, for me it is hopeful and inspiring. Centuries after we have lived our lives and passed on little bits of us will still live on in all of our descendants and their descendants and in some way great or small the world be changed and shaped because we were here. Besides that, our growing knowledge of genes and science will lead to a much greater understanding of the universe and everything in it. Much of what we are learning about genetics could potentially cure illness and ease human suffering. To me that is a much more inspirational message than a book about angry deities who punish us for real or imagined wrongdoings. I would recommend the book both to readers who are interested in science and to philosophers who are seeking deeper meaning in their lives.

Easy to read and very interesting

Dawkins writes this book in a very clear and easy to understand way. This is good for someone like me, who prior to reading the book had little to no knowledge on genetics, or anything else on the subject. While his writing can be a little dry, as I expected it would be from a book on this subject, it was never a struggle to get through. He writes it in an accommodating way that allows those less knowledgable on the subject to understand what is going on, without any difficult to understand lingo on the subject that I would perhaps struggle with.
In each chapter he focuses on a subject to help us better understand what he is trying to tell us about our genetic tendencies, but he does this in a way that is a little unusual. Many of the chapter’s focuses are on things that are unrelated to the specific topic of the book. While there are things that are related, like how DNA is formed, to more unrelated ones like what cases certain sexual partners are attracted to one another. This works pretty well and helps to bring his point across. All in all, the book left me feeling better educated on a range of topics addressed in the book, as well as in the selfishness of our genes.

About the Author
Thomas J. Schoenbaum is the Dean Rusk Professor of Law at the University of Georgia. He has authored five major books and more than 100 articles on admiralty, environmental and international law. A practicing attorney with over twenty-seven years of experience, Professor Schoebaum has also received five Fulbright scholarships in foreign countries.

Honestly the only good book out there on this topic

I have been looking for additional books on Admiralty Law, yet sadly always come back to a good review of a book that ends up being this exact book. It covers pretty much all the bases if only just briefly, and is the only written work, aside from very specific works, that gives you most, if not all, aspects of maritime and admiralty law. It even helps you understand the difference between the two, which for the longest time I thought the two terms were interchangeable! I love this book, I do wish it was a bit more detailed in parts, but is a great place to start on any study in the field. Additionally, the seller was just great, no issues and timely shipping :)

If you are doing any work in Admiralty and need an up to date authoritative source, this is it. Hell, even teh Supreme Court will sometimes cite this book for propositions of Admiralty and Maritime Law.

I have spent my life at sea. So did my son.

Deaths, accidents and collisions and sinkings at sea are not viewed by U.S. Courts with laws that confine the everyday civil, criminal, commercial, or real estate business of this country. Like the sea itself, U.S. Maritime Law is a collection of interconnected forces that one must navigate to pass.
Thomas J. Schonenbaum helped my family understand and navigate the legal proceedings after my son's death at sea.
