Amazon.com Review
Part 1 of Designing Great Beers is a complete book in itself, focused solely on home-brewing ingredients and techniques (including three superb chapters on hops alone). Ray Daniels proves himself the "techie" type, infusing his introductory chapters with as much brewing math as brewing lore. Yet, Daniels never hops off the deep end of beer geekdom. Instead, he complements this emphasis on data with the creative use of graphics; where one could get bogged down in the stats, there is usually a clear visual depiction to instantly summarize their meaning.

This focus on facts continues into part 2 of Daniels's guide, where it backs an admirably pragmatic take on beer styles and their importance in home-brewing. Daniels devotes a chapter to each of 14 major style categories, detailing historical origins and modern brewing techniques. He lays a contemporary groundwork by compiling and analyzing the recipes of the National Homebrew Competition's most successful beers. The assumption is that beers deemed representative of particular beer styles in modern competitions serve as ideal models for recipe creation. Among the information provided for each style is a chart showing the percentage of brewers using each type of grain and in what proportions the grains were added. Similar data are supplied for hop varieties, yeast strains, and water treatment. This reverse engineering of award-winning beers naturally benefits experienced brewers seeking to wow judges at the next competition. Yet, even brewers taking their first shy steps into creating their own recipes have much to gain from this kind of practical analysis. Daniels provides the basic tools a brewer of any level can use to formulate recipes with confidence and creativity. --Todd Gehman

Review

Designing Great Beers is must reading for every home brewer, microbrewer, and fun armchair reading for armchair reader contemplating the perfect brew. -- Midwest Book Review

Good book, poor ebook
By R. Danley
The print version of the book is excellent. Unfortunately, when preparing the ebook, the publishers apparently used optical character recognition software, and didn't proofread the final copy.

Many of the equations needed to determine the amounts needed in the recipes make no sense. This makes the strongest points of the book worthless. Until the equation errors are corrected, I would recommend saving your money for the print copy

If you want to learn how to design great beers - buy this book. If you want a list of recipes, look elsewhere.
By P. Mulloy
Ray Daniels started home brewing in 1989, became a certified amateur beer judge in 1992, and won a beer writer of the year award in 1998. Daniels is the founder and director of the Cicerone Certification Program – a Sommelier program for beer servers. He is currently on the faculty of the Siebel Institute of Technology - a world class brewing school in Chicago founded in 1872. Daniels has authored over 2 dozen books. He wrote this book in 1996, published it in 1998 and copyrighted it again in 2000. The bulk of the book is over 20 years out of date. Some styles have emerged in the past 20 years such as Belgian Wits, Saisons, sours, Imperial IPAs and other big gravity beers that he does not cover. Even out of date, the book warrants 5 stars. Daniels has written this book for the advanced home brewer and small craft brewer. The book is not a compendium of beer recipes. It’s what the title says: Designing Great Beers. Daniels guides the brewer through how to create beer recipes rather than giving the brewer a list. Part One, roughly a third of the book, covers how to develop a plan for creating a great beer: 1) what are the characteristics of the beer you want to make, 2) how to figure out how much malt or malt extract you will need, 3) how much and what kind of water will you need, 4) what kind of hops, how much and when to add them, 5) what kind of yeast do you want and what temperatures do you need for it, and 6) how to finish your beer. Sure he uses math. How else would a brewer figure out how much malt, hops or yeast to use and how else would brewer know how to correct his or her water? Part 2, comprising about two thirds of the book reviews the major styles of the mid to late 1990s. Daniels provides background information on the style, reviews the basic techniques of the style and then he reviews recipe examples for commercial beers and home brew recipes from the National Homebrew Competition for 1993 and 1994. Anyone mastering the techniques described in the first part of the book and observing how Daniels applies those techniques in the second half of the book should be able fill in the blanks for the news styles that have emerged in the past 20 years. If you want to improve your brewing techniques and learn how to design great beers, then buy this book. If you want a list of recipes, look elsewhere. Amazon review 12-16-14

Great Book - Needs Updating
By Tbone
This is great advanced brewing book with tons of useful information. It will help you on your path to advanced brewing and recipe formulation like no other. The historical information on various styles is very interesting. In 1996 when the first issue of this book was released it would be a 5 star rating but it loses 2 stars in 2014 for these reasons. It's somewhat geared towards extract brewing so if you are an all grain brewer, as I am, it will be of less immediate practical value. The technical info is there in the early chapters , you just need to initially convert for all grain base malt instead of extract. Not difficult but not ideal. Also, the book is in major need of updating. While the theory of beer formulation and design can be applied across all beer styles there is nary a mention of any Belgian ale style. When you think about the profound impact the belgian exports have had on the craft brewing world in the last 10 - 15 years it is sorely missed. This is also true for other popular styles. IPA's are treated as an almost strictly British product, much less heavily hopped than they are currently in the States where, at this point, they are almost a different style entirely.

All that said, I still think it's a worthwhile purchase but I wouldn't bother with it until you have brewed at least 100 batches and have your process and technique dialed in. In my opinion, your copies of "Brewing Classic Styles" and "How to Brew"need to be worn out and wort stained long before you buy this book.

The Water Princess, by Susan Verde, Georgie Badiel

Based on supermodel Georgie Badiel’s childhood, a young girl dreams of bringing clean drinking water to her African village

With its wide sky and warm earth, Princess Gie Gie’s kingdom is a beautiful land. But clean drinking water is scarce in her small African village. And try as she might, Gie Gie cannot bring the water closer; she cannot make it run clearer. Every morning, she rises before the sun to make the long journey to the well. Instead of a crown, she wears a heavy pot on her head to collect the water. After the voyage home, after boiling the water to drink and clean with, Gie Gie thinks of the trip that tomorrow will bring. And she dreams. She dreams of a day when her village will have cool, crystal-clear water of its own.

Inspired by the childhood of African–born model Georgie Badiel, acclaimed author Susan Verde and award-winning author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds have come together to tell this moving story. As a child in Burkina Faso, Georgie and the other girls in her village had to walk for miles each day to collect water. This vibrant, engaging picture book sheds light on this struggle that continues all over the world today, instilling hope for a future when all children will have access to clean drinking water.

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Based on the real childhood experiences of fashion model Georgie Badiel in Burkina Faso, this offering tells one child's story in an unspecified African locale. Princess Gie Gie tries to rule over her domain. She tames wild dogs with a song, makes tall grass dance when she dances, and plays hide-and-seek with the wind. However, try as she might, she can't draw clean water any closer to her home. Instead, the girl and her mother must make a long trek to gather water from the well with the rest of the women. They try to fill their time with music, imagination, and laughter, but the hardship and physical effort are palpable. Despite the daily struggles to get water, Princess Gie Gie never gives up looking for a solution. "I am Princess Gie Gie. My Kingdom? The African sky. The dusty earth. And, someday, the flowing, cool, crystal-clear water. Someday…." Perhaps, someday has now arrived. Badiel is helping to raise awareness and funds to bring clean drinking water to the people of Burkina Faso and other countries in Africa. While the text is informative and poetic, it is the imagery that will stick with readers. Reynolds's evocative watercolor, gouache, and digital ink paintings capture the glow of the hot sun, sparkle in the night sky, and will transport children to Princess Gie Gie's imagined kingdom. Kids will have to look to the author note and elsewhere for more specifics and possible solutions. VERDICT A lovely picture book, filled with messages of perseverance and hope.—Megan Egbert, Meridian Library District, ID

About the Author

Susan Verde grew up in a brownstone in the heart of Greenwich Village. She spent much of her time as a child clad in bell bottoms and rainbow suspenders, roller skating up and down her block with a skate key around her neck and a piece of chalk in her pocket (for spontaneous hopscotch). Susan's love of literature began in utero (according to her mother) and never dwindled. She can, to this day, relate very well to Amelia Bedelia. After spending a number of years working as an elementary school teacher, Susan now writes and teaches kid’s yoga in East Hampton, New York, where she lives amidst an explosion of Legos, art supplies, and picture books with her twin boys, Joshua and Gabriel, and her daughter, Sophia. They are the constant inspiration for her writing. They never let her forget how to see things from a child's point of view and keep the kid in her alive and kicking.

Georgie Badiel is a high-fashion model who hails from the landlocked country of Burkina Faso. After she won the title of Miss Africa in 2005, Georgie’s profile continued to soar as she appeared on the runways of designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Louis Vuitton, and Diane Von Furstenberg and was featured in editorials for magazines including Russian Vogue, Essence, and Elle. The Water Princess is inspired by her childhood in her small village in Burkina Faso.

Peter H. Reynolds is an author and illustrator, as well as the founder of the educational media company FableVision. Reynolds is best known for his children’s books about authentic learning, creativity, and self-expression. His picture books include The Dot, which has been published in over twenty languages, and the New York Times bestseller Someday by Alison McGhee. Reynolds lives in Dedham, Massachusetts, and is the co-owner of his family’s book store, The Blue Bunny Bookstore.

The pictures in the book are amazing - the colors are beautiful
By Jeff Potts
Based on the Amazon description and Community Reviews, I pre-ordered The Water Princess believing it to be a very thought provoking story for my oldest daughter. The pictures in the book are amazing - the colors are beautiful. Unfortunately my daughter had a hard time following the story line.

I read in one Community Review that there was "not much in the way of a plot." Based on the story's amazing description, I might agree with this statement a little. I think the bigger problem my daughter had connecting with the story dealt with the writing style. A few Community Reviews share that the book was lyrically written. This is absolutely true but I would not say that this lyrical writing style is consistent from page to page. The sections within the story that I would describe as lyrically written read so very differently than other parts of the story that I would not describe in this way. As the person reading this book to my daughter, I could physically feel the change in style.

In defense of the book, the type of lyrical writing that can be seen in this book and the content are so very different than the types of stories that I typically read with my child.

After the story is a brief description of the global need for access to clean drinking water. Based on the data in the book, I was unaware how great this need actually is. My daughter found these facts interesting but never related it back to the girl in the story.

She Loves It.
By BDJ
My 6 year old grand-daughter loves this book. After I read it to her twice she asked so many questions about why they didn't have the facilities we have to obtain water. She's been carrying it around with her since she got it. I think this is the first book she connected with. So glad I purchased it.

Outstanding in Every Way.
By GWK
This books was outstanding in every way. The images, words, typography, etc. were all just delightful. My five year-old made the connection to the Water Princess. In the U.S. and other western countries, we have so much abundance and it is too easy to take everything we have for granted -- even simple, but important things like drinking water. My daughter got the point from this book in a way that was easy-to-understand without being overly dramatic or sad. In fact, in these very simple pages, the Water Princess remained an optimist and maintained her dignity. This is NOT a sad or depressing book, despite the central theme. It is very age appropriate and an important story for young children who have so much and maybe do not yet realize how different things are for those who live on the other side of the planet. This book opened up many conversations with my daughter to help her better understand these complex issues.

The Innovator's Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail, by Clayton M. Christensen

Great companies can fail―not because they do anything wrong, but because they do everything right. Meeting customers' current needs leads firms to reject breakthrough innovations―"disruptive technologies" that create the products and opportunities of the future.

Radical thinking…and a wake-up call. Citing examples from many industries (computers, retailing, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, steel), Clayton M. Christensen explains how to avoid a similar fate. He presents strategies for determining when not to listen to customers, when to pursue small markets at the expense of larger ones, and other ways to ensure long-term growth and profit. This award-winning book shows managers the changes that may be coming―and how to respond for success.

Amazon.com Review
What do the Honda Supercub, Intel's 8088 processor, and hydraulic excavators have in common? They are all examples of disruptive technologies that helped to redefine the competitive landscape of their respective markets. These products did not come about as the result of successful companies carrying out sound business practices in established markets. In The Innovator's Dilemma, author Clayton M. Christensen shows how these and other products cut into the low end of the marketplace and eventually evolved to displace high-end competitors and their reigning technologies.

At the heart of The Innovator's Dilemma is how a successful company with established products keeps from being pushed aside by newer, cheaper products that will, over time, get better and become a serious threat. Christensen writes that even the best-managed companies, in spite of their attention to customers and continual investment in new technology, are susceptible to failure no matter what the industry, be it hard drives or consumer retailing. Succinct and clearly written, The Innovator's Dilemma is an important book that belongs on every manager's bookshelf. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

From Booklist
The author, an associate professor at Harvard Business School, asks why some well-managed companies that stay on top of new technology and practice quality customer service can still falter. His own research brought a surprising answer to that question. Christensen suggests that by placing too great an emphasis on satisfying customers' current needs, companies fail to adapt or adopt new technology that will meet customers' unstated or future needs, and he argues that such companies will eventually fall behind. Christensen calls this phenomenon "disruptive technology" and demonstrates its effects in industries as diverse as the manufacture of hard-disk drives and mass retailing. He goes on to offer solutions by providing strategies for anticipating changes in markets. This book is another in the publisher's Management of Innovation and Change series. David Rouse

Disruptive technologies create a threat to large companies
By Coert Visser
This is a book is about successful, well-led companies -often market leaders- that carefully pay attention to what customers need and that invest heavily in new technologies, but still loose their market leadership suddenly. This can happen when disruptive technologies enter the stage. Most technologies improve the performance of existing products in relation to the criteria which existing customers have always used. These technologies are called sustaining technologies. Disruptive technologies do something different. They create an entirely new value proposition. They improve the performance of the product in relation to new performance criteria. Products which are based on disruptive technologies are often smaller, cheaper, simpler, and easier to use. However, the moment they are introduced, they can not at once compete against the traditional products and so they cannot directly reach a big market. Christensen researched how disruptive technologies have developed in the computer disk industry, an extremely rapid evolving industry. He identified six steps in the emergence of disruptive technologies:
1. Disruptive technologies often are invented in traditional large companies. Example: at Seagate Technology, the biggest producer of 5,25 disks, engineers in 1985 designed the first 3,5 disk.
2. The marketing department examines first reactions from important customers to the new technology. Then they notice that existing customers are not very interested and they conclude that not a lot of money can be made with the new product. Example: this is what happened at Seagate. The 3,5 disk's were put upon the shelf.
3. The company keeps on investing in the traditional technology. Performance improvement of the traditional technology is highly appreciated by existing customers and a lot of money is being made. Example: Seagate invested in the 5,25 disk technology. This led to considerable improvement of the technology and to a considerable improvement of sales.
4. New companies are started up (by ex-employees of the traditional companies) and markets for the new technology emerge by trial and error. Example: ex-Seagate people started up Corner Peripherals. This company focused on the small emerging market for 3,5 inch disks. In the beginning this was only for the laptop market.
5. The new players move up in the market. The performance of the new technologies gets better after some time, enabling them to compete better and better with the traditional companies and products. Example: the performance of the 3,5 disks improved drastically. The 3,5 inch disk moved up in the market, to the personal computer market. Corner pushed Seagate out of the PC market for 3,5 inch disk drives.
6. Traditional companies try to defend their market position and to get along in the new market. Often they notice that they have fallen behind so far, that they cannot keep up. Example: Seagate did not succeed in capturing a significant part of the new market for 3,5 inch disk drives for PC's.
The events described above can be understood by the four principles of disruptive technologies which Christensen formulates:
1. In well-led companies it is customers, not managers, who actually determine resources allocation. This is a proposition of the resources dependence theory (Pfeffer & Salancik, 1978) which is supported strongly by the research of Christensen. In essence: middle managers will not tend to invest in technologies that are not directly appreciated by important (large) clients, because they will not be able to get quick financial gains by doing this.
2. Small markets can not fulfil the growth need of large companies. For several reasons, growth is important for companies. Unfortunately, the bigger the company, the harder it is to continue growth. A small company (40 million sales) with a growth target of 20%, must achieve 8 million extra sales. A large company (4 billion sales), has to achieve 800 million of extra sales! Emerging markets often simply are not large enough to fulfil such growth needs. They can, however, fulfil the growth needs of new small companies.
3. Markets that do not exist can not be analysed. The ultimate applications of disruptive technologies can not be foreseen on forehand. Failure is an intrinsic unavoidable step to success.
4. Technology supply does not always equal the market demand. The speed of technological progress is often bigger than the speed with which the customer demand develops. By improving the performance of the disruptive technologies (for instance the 3,5 inch disks, first only used in the laptop market), they became suitable for the larger PC-market.
These steps explain why traditional companies are often not capable of applying disruptive technologies. Christensen argues that you can not resist these four principles. What you can do however, is use them to your advantage. For instance: in a large company you can create an 'island' where the new technology is developed for the new market. Also it is possible get an ownership in emerging companies which develop the new technologies (several companies have done this successfully).
I think the innovator's Dilemma is an excellent book. The ideas are empirically foudend and together they form a coherent theoretical framework. The examples from the computer disk industry, the steel industry and others, are very well-documented and interesting. The book is logically structured and reads easily.

Identifying the horns of the dilemma.
By Dave Kinnear
Prior to reading this book, I chalked up the misfortunes of the well run companies of our time to the vagaries of the market place and put them in the same shoulder shrugging category of "bad things happen to good people." But now I have a new way of looking at success and failure due to disruptive technology. I better understand my own frustrations of trying to do new things in a large corporation given the further insight from Christensen that assets are really managed by customers, not our own managers. That is what makes this book scary. There seems little hope of any large corporation staying on top of disruptive technology unless they follow the prescription of segregating those innovations from the usual corporate overhead structure. That means spinning off groups, taking equity positions in start-up firms, and/or completely funding start-ups to grow the new markets. The writing is clear, the data gathered is thorough and fully documented with ample notes, the logic is concise, and the conclusions are entirely logical. Christensen gives us formulas for success including agnostic marketing to help us recognize emerging markets. The case studies are at once interesting and compelling. This is a must read for managers in any industry. Dr. Andrew S. Grove, Chairman and CEO of Intel Corporation had this to say, "This book addresses a tough problem that most successful companies will face eventually. It's lucid, analytical-and scary."

What is the Innovator's Dilemma?
By Amazon Customer
In The Innovator's dilemma, Clayton Christensen describes the dynamics by which some of the largest, most successful companies in America fail due to "good" management. In his analysis, firms that dedicate themselves to listening to and serving their customers the best, place themselves most at risk for future failures as they are overtaken by smaller upstart competitors with innovative technologies.
The Innovator's Dilemma makes a compelling argument based on the author's study of the computer disk drive industry. Disk drive manufacturing was chosen for its frequent turnover of technology and competitors in a relatively short timespan.
Cristensen places technological innovations in two categories: sustaining and disruptive. Sustaining innovations are those that help sustain an organization's existing customer base by improving the performance, capacity, reliability, or value of an existing product technology. Disruptive innovations produce products that are technologically inferior from the perspective of a firm's existing customer base. Disruptive products, however, may include improvements that, while unimportant to the existing market, hold potential for new and emerging markets. Christensen uses the example of the introduction of small 50cc Honda motorcycles in the late 1950's. From the perspective of the existing motorcycle market at the time, the Honda was inferior compared to larger, more powerful motorcycles such as Harley Davidson and BMW. Honda found a niche, however, as a dirt bike - an emerging market that had not been explored by other manufacturers but was ideally suited for a small, inexpensive motorcycle.
Once a market is established for a disruptive technology, it can then evolve into the mainstream and become technologically improved to the point of competing with and eventually overtaking existing mainstream technologies. In the case of Honda, once a market was established, small motorcycles were technologically improved to the point of appealing to a mass market rather than just dirt bike enthusiasts.
Organizations overlook disruptive technologies for a variety of reasons. Often, larger organizations listen to their existing customers and what is important to them, overlooking small, emerging markets. The innovator's dilemma is that at the time disruptive technologies are introduced, mainstream companies are often wildly successful marketing their sustaining technology to existing customers. Investing in disruptive technology necessitates a diversion of resources away from the organization's most profitable activities that its customers are asking for, toward an unproven technology with a small, uncertain market. Disruptive technologies are often not as cost effective to manufacture or sell when they are viewed from the perspective of existing markets. Small 3.5 inch disk drives, for example, initially cost more per megabyte of capacity compared to larger 5.25 inch drives while, and they had less overall capacity Although they were not attractive to desktop computer manufactures, they represented a cost effective solution to the needs of the emerging mobile computer market where size was more important than large capacity.
Citing examples from a number of industries, Christensen makes the point that traditional business planning works well for established markets and sustaining technologies. In the case of disruptive technologies, however, he argues that strategy should be based on discovery of new opportunities and that individuals working on the development and marketing of disruptive technologies should be organizationally separate.
Overall, the Innovator's Dilemma is a concise, well written book in which the author is able to effectively convey a technically complex study on a technically complex industry. Overall, the Innovator's Dilemma should be required reading for anyone in an business planning role.

The Tribes of Yahweh: A Sociology of the Religion of Liberated Israel, 1250-1050 B. C. E., by Norman K. Gottwald

A twentieth-anniversary reprint of the landmark book that launched the current explosion of social-scientific studies in the biblical field. It sets forth a cultural-material methodology for reconstructing the origins of ancient Israel and offers the hypothesis that Israel emerged as an indigenous social revolutionary peasant movement. In a new preface, written for this edition, Gottwald takes account of the 'sea change' in biblical studies since 1979 as he reviews the impact of his work on church and academy, assesses its merits and limitations, indicates his present thinking on the subject, and points toward future directions in the social-critical study of ancient Israel and the Hebrew Bible.

More and Better Than Expected!
By @joemcfddn
The C. S. Lewis book titled “The Weight of Glory” is actually a collection of essays or lectures made by Lewis. The title of the book comes from the first of these lectures and is also the most quoted of them. Since this book is a compilation, I provide below a brief overview of each essay below.

The Weight of Glory 6/8/1941 – In this address, Lewis first talks about the longings we each have: the deep longing for something which no experience on earth satisfies though we have faint glimpses of, like a memory of something long ago. It’s the desire that beauty stirs within us, the longing to be fully immersed and joined into the beauty. It’s what others have described as the God shaped void within us. Lewis argues that this longing proves that there must be a world where this longing can be fulfilled and that we are made for that world.

Lewis takes some time to discuss the idea of rewards received for work. First, there are rewards which are not directly connected to the work, such as being paid to clean for example. Then there are rewards which are clearly organically tied to the effort to obtain them, such as a good marriage is the reward for loving one’s spouse. Lewis points out that while the former can be accused of only doing the work for the reward, this makes no sense to say in the latter case. Lewis also notes that some rewards, while organically tied to the effort taken to obtain them, aren’t recognized as desirable until one has obtained them or is at least closer to that goal. Lewis uses the example that one wouldn’t know they enjoy Greek poetry until after they had gone through the work of learning Greek.

Lewis believes that heaven is like this. I think he conceived of everything in heaven as being of a higher order than things of this world. Thus he talks about how we improperly long for worldly things, which are really a false substitute for the heavenly things we ought to long for.

Lewis spends most of the remainder of the lecture talking about glory. He thinks that while seeking fame on earth may be conceited, desiring to please God is not. This is the first sense of glory. The second is in how we will “shine” as God’s masterpieces. Lewis considers this idea that God can take delight in us to be something so amazing that we can barely believe it—the “weight or burden of glory”.

Finally, Lewis discusses how we ought to keep other’s glory in mind when considering those around us and how this ought to keep us humble.

Learning in War-Time 10/22/1939 – Lewis addresses how study can seem to be a trivial pursuit during war time. His argument is primarily that we must engage in normal human activity whatever the circumstances are. And there is always some crisis or matter which may seem more important. For example, the matter of heaven and hell is always present and more significant than war. Study is a necessary undertaking to which some have been called and which they should work at despite distraction, frustration and fear.

Why I’m not a Pacifist 1940 – Lewis first lays a foundation from which he will build the rest of his arguments. The foundation consists of Lewis’ view of the conscious as having two parts: a drive to do what is right and beliefs about what right and wrong are. Lewis next explains his concept of reason by which he will address the latter portion of the conscious. A reasonable argument, says Lewis, consists of facts, “intuition”, and a series of linked, logical propositions. What Lewis means by intuition is that which can’t be argued but with which virtually everyone agrees, such as love is good and hate is bad. (Lewis believes that people “must be trained in obedience to the moral intuitions…”, an idea he also addresses in The Abolition of Man.) Authority is also an important consideration in deciding a matter, both because we don’t have time to examine every belief and because our beliefs are liable to be corrupted.

After all this groundwork, Lewis finally begins making his case. First, he considers the fact of whether or not all wars do more harm than good, concluding that “history is full of useful wars as well as of useless wars.” He next examines whether the intuition of love as better than hate (or helping as better than harming) leads to pacifism or not. First, he recognizes that we are incapable of helping everyone so that to help one means not helping another. He then states that if two parties are in conflict, for an observing party to do nothing would violate the intuition. (He assumes that action would come in the form of physical intervention and violence.) From here says, “The question is whether war is the greatest evil in the world…”. This shows that he thinks of pacifism as the view that war should never be engaged in. And the only reason he could see to take this position would be if it could be argued that war is always worse than the alternative. After this, he argues that pacifism is impractical, because pacifists will be overcome by those who are not.

Turning next to authority, Lewis argues that human authority, both specific (England at that time) and general (“righteous war” praised throughout history) support war.

Examining at last divine authority, Lewis argues that current Christian authority and Christian history both support violence. The only verse which Lewis apparently can think of which might support pacifism is Matthew 5:39, “Do not resist an evil person”. Lewis believes Jesus here is addressing personal revenge and considers Paul and Peter’s talk about government using the sword as support for Christians using the sword. Lastly Lewis considers his bias and argues that since it would be more convenient to be a pacifist, it is more likely for one to be biased towards it. In other words, not finding a logical reason to be pacifist nor authoritative support, Lewis concludes that people must be pacifist because it is easier and more convenient for them to do so.1

Transposition 5/28/1944 – Essentially, as I understand it, Lewis is addressing the argument that since alleged supernatural works of the Holy Spirit manifest as naturally explainable phenomenon, isn’t it more reasonable to believe all such instances are simply natural, not supernatural? Lewis’ argument is that the “higher” spiritual must be transposed into the “lower” natural world and must therefore use otherwise natural means to do so. He uses the metaphor of how we attempt to represent three-dimensional reality in two-dimensional drawings.

Is Theology Poetry? 11/6/1944 – Lewis addresses the question of if our beliefs about God (and even in the existence of God) are merely fanciful and quaint ideas we hold sentimentally but without any true reality behind them.

The Inner Ring 12/14/1944 – Lewis speaks about the desire to be “in” and accepted along with the fear of being left out and rejected. He warns against the danger of doing wrong in order to fit in as well as the fleeting nature of the sense of being “in”.

Membership 2/10/1945 – Lewis refutes the idea of Christianity as a private, individual, personal matter alone. He takes some time to differentiate between groups whose members are different but complementary (metaphor of church as a body) and mere collections of like people or things. Lewis also touches on hierarchy and authority. Overall, Lewis basically argues against isolated individualism on one hand and homogeneous collectivism on the other.

On Forgiveness 8/28/1947 – Lewis talks about God’s forgiveness of our sins. He explores the difference between excusing (I understand, no big deal, etc.) and true forgiveness as well as how this relates to forgiving others.

A Slip of the Tongue 1/29/1956 – Lewis warns against the temptation to “play” at Christianity which comes from the desire to hold onto the things of the world. Refusing to let go of these things causes one to not get too spiritual to the point which would require real change in their life.

The Weight of Glory by C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis writes with a very intriguing and interesting style, especially in one of his great books titled The Weight of Glory. He is a very logical writer that is able to tie in emotions to keep the reader engaged and be able to relate to the topics. The book is organized in different sections with different topics. The title of this work refers to the connection to Christianity in all of his topics. C.S. Lewis is a strong Christian that directs his writing at other Christians and non-Christians; he makes the reader think about how he/she can change for the better for whatever topic is being discussed. The arguments in this piece are set up from a logical standpoint therefore, the reader will find a lot of strong warrants for each claim that Lewis states. The topics that Lewis will be discussed from Lewis’s piece include: “On Forgiveness,” “Learning in War Time,” “The Inner Ring,” and “Membership.”
The overall background of the writings includes resolving common issues in the context of Christianity. The first topic that Lewis discusses is forgiveness. An example of how he relates the topic of forgiveness to Christianity is how many Christians will ask God to excuse them instead of confessing their full sin and truly believe in God’s forgiveness. Lewis (2001) makes this claim and then backs it up with evidence immediately by writing, “If you had a perfect excuse, you would not need forgiveness; if the whole of your action needs forgiveness, then there was no excuse for it” (p. 179). This is very logical support from Lewis and it is shown by his “if, then” statements.
Another topic that Lewis brings up is titled, “Learning in War Time.” This reading describes the everyday war that Christians endure. It really struck me when Lewis said he believes that all humans are called to be righteous in the duties we participate in within this war. He then continues from a logical standpoint by saying that every duty is a religious duty, thus it is absolute that it’s our obligation perform every duty in the name of God. This statement caught my attention because it teaches me that I can do every duty I am called to do in my life to the glory of God. The way that Lewis warrants this statement comes from a very emotional standpoint, which gives the reader a strong example to test their morality in a certain situation. Lewis (2001) attacks the reader’s emotions when he writes, “Thus we may have a duty to rescue a drowning man and, perhaps, if we live on a dangerous coast, to learn lifesaving so as to be ready for any drowning man when he turns up” (p.53). Not only was I able to relate to this example, but it definitely tested my morality. Before Lewis even said in the next sentence, “It may be our duty to lose our own lives in saving him,” I already thought to myself that I would be willing to die for another person through my own moral/emotional mindset. As mentioned, I was also to be able to relate to the situation. For example, I have taken a few CPR and childhood safety classes because my mom runs a daycare; therefore, I always have to be ready to act if any of the children ever had any health implications.
“The Inner Ring” dilemma is another topic that Lewis presents. Logic is, once again, used by Lewis in the strongest way in explaining this concept and relating it to Christianity. The inner ring represents an individual always wanting to be involved in something for the lone reason of just wanting to be “in.” Unless we can find virtue, happiness, loyalty, and kindness in the things we’re involved in, we will always feel excluded and we will always be looking for more. This is exactly what Lewis explains before he boldly states his two reasons behind this dilemma. The first reason he stated was that passion for the ring is the most skillful thing in causing a good man to do bad things. In his second reason, he said that until one conquers the fear of being an outsider, an outsider that individual will remain. He even makes a clear comparison to the reader for better understanding, which is something Lewis is very effective at. He is the type of author that can make the topic easily relate to the reader, which helps with better understanding for the reader.
The last topic that Lewis discusses is the issue on “Membership.” This is another case of Lewis showing his strength in logic by making a statement and then supporting it with two bold reasons. There were two reasons behind why he stated for religion to be solitude is dangerous. He then proceeded with his logical reasoning by quoting the modern world, “You may be religious when you are alone, and I will see to it that you are never alone” (p.160). Of course, he explains in detail what this means by saying it is basically banishing all of Christianity to believe in this statement. Supporting the claim with a second warrant, he says, “There is the danger that real Christians who know that Christianity is not a solitary affair may react against that error by simply transporting into our spiritual life that same collectivism which has already conquered our secular life” (p.160). When Lewis clearly states a few reasons a claim is true, it shows how sharp his logical reasoning is.
As mentioned before, the book appealed to me in an extremely logical way. Lewis also incorporates an emotional effect on the reader in a few different topic areas. The writing was very easy for me to understand and relate to, which makes the reading much more intriguing. Even though I am the type of audience that Lewis is mainly targeting (Christians), I do believe that non-Christians would also be blown away by Lewis’s powerful writing style. The book, The Weight of Glory, showed the importance of recognizing certain topics/issues present in our world today and being able to relate them to Christianity to understand how we can make a difference for the better in the glory of God.

Excellent Answers for Questioning Students
By Jennifer Sandberg
I would definitely recommend The Weight of Glory to any Christian with questions about living a life of faith. Lewis especially targets the college student population with his great understanding and use of logical arguments. He deals with practical concerns and pragmatic solutions. He serves the truth of the Bible with the hope found in God. In this book, Lewis attempts to address common issues young Christians struggle with as they try to own their faith in a post-World War culture. For example, in the chapter “Learning in Wartime,” he says, “If we let ourselves, we shall always be waiting for some distraction or other to end before we can really get down to our work.” Procrastination: every college student has experienced it, and Lewis responds to it. He demonstrates an understanding off the issues, along with the feelings and emotions young people would have concerning them. He’s thorough in his logic and has obviously thought things through. In The Weight of Glory, he begins by emotionally tugging on the reader, then hits him with a sound argument, and leaves him with practical advice on how to continue living as an enlightened Christian. He brings himself on the same level as his readers; he doesn’t leave them with the lofty opinions of a scholar, but with the guidelines of one experienced Christian to a younger. In his explanations and arguments, Lewis uses a lot of analogies. This is extremely helpful as he tries to explain himself and illustrate his point, however, he sometimes takes the analogies too far. He overuses some analogies and stretches them too far. This book has made my faith stronger and inspired me to live a more thoughtful life as a Christian. I want to read more of Lewis’ works and delve more deeply into his doctrine.

The Ascension of Laney (Ascent Series Book 1), by Kris Hack

I loved him at fifteen. I thought we’d stand the test of time. He was my forever but maybe I fell too fast or loved him too much. Maybe I came on too strong or maybe I did something wrong. He still left. Turned his back on me without a word. I never thought I’d see him again and to be honest, I didn’t want to. I began to hate him even though he would never know it. But then, I did see him again and with him came the secrets that would forever change all of our lives.

She was only a recurring dream in my foggy subconscious. A voice. A face. We weren’t supposed to dream. We weren’t supposed to remember. They said it was impossible and the before would never come into the now. None of the others remember, at least not that I know of. What I do know is that she was my everything, my every waking breath. Now that I’ve found her I will not be losing her a second time. She will be mine again, no matter what the cost.

They fall in love but one day Kass disappears
By Jayelle
Laney and Kass meet as teenagers. They fall in love but one day Kass disappears. Laney is shattered. But life goes on. Laney goes off to college and it's there that she runs into Kass again. Laney wantes answers. Why did he leave? Why didn't he ever come looking for her? What happpened to his parents? Kass doesn't have the answers Lanet is seeking. He has ascended. His memories are spotty. He has no idea where his parents are. All he knows is that he has to win Laney back, even if she is just an assignment.

The Ascension of Laney is about good and evil. Laney is an Ascent but she has no idea. Kass is there to train her once she comes into her powers. But in order to do that an innocent has to die by her hands. The Ascent are a lower form of angels. They get their assignments and orders from the Archangels. One rule is that you cannot be with a human. Otherwise, you fall. You lose your wings. The Archs aren't the only angels waiting for Laney to come into her powers. The Fallen are too. Laney is a powerful Ascent, only she doesn't know it. Yet.

This was a really good book. Kass and Owen make a funny team. Laney is an enjoyable lead character. She isn't the typical whimpering female lead. She is a take charge kind of gal. The story flows really well. There is no lag at all. A great mix of paranormal, adventure, fantasy, action and romance. Definitely a must read. I am really looking forward to the next part of Laney's story.

Kass and Laney had an epic kind of love and he vanishes
By Amazon Customer
Kris Hack takes you right into the world of Angels with the Ascension of Laney, and doesn’t let you leave until the last page. Her characters are well developed and intriguing.

Kass and Laney had an epic kind of love and he vanishes, like off the face of the Earth. Laney is heartbroken, just as any teenaged girl would be. She still holds a grudge for that heartbreak five years later.

This book will keep you on your toes and your pages turning! Kris Hack makes you fall in love with an angel! I really enjoyed this book and normally I don’t read paranormal romance.

**** 4 stars from me.
By Ann-Marie Roberts
Firstly, let me say I really enjoyed this book.
It's one of the better ones I've read recently.
I'm a little late coming into this series as I know Kris Hack has recently released the third book and she's well on her way to writing the fourth. Happily I have the second and third books and you can be sure I'll be moving onto them A.S.A.P.
To be honest it wasn't super exciting or dramatic but in my opinion Kris Hack has done all the right things, ticked all the right boxes for a first book. It was more an easy slow burn of building up to the next book. A great introduction to the four main characters, Laney, Kass, Miguel and Ryan, who I just know you will grow to love. It was an easy read and it kept me interested and invested the whole way. I loved the supernatural concept and am looking forward to being fully immersed into their changed lives in the next book, The Fall of Kass. Not giving any spoilers away. Just go read it!
