Not so hot...

I found this book to be quite disappointing. It is written in the typical academic, European fashion of being hyper-intellectualized, to the point of being precious and vastly over-wrought. Sometimes it is downright incomprehensible, as though the author is using long strings of poetic imagery that are not tethered to the ground. I read a couple of paragraphs of this book to my wife, and her reaction was "What the heck?" "Huh?"

It is also highly repetitive, going over the same themes time and time again, expressing them in slightly different terms each time. This book could have been cut in half and still covered the same ground. So, all told, I found this book to be very irritating. I strongly recommend Paul Bley's book "Stopping Time" instead.

For those unaware, it was Mr. Bley who was in the middle of the early free jazz movement in Los Angeles, pairing up interesting groups of talented musicians, ultimately introducing the members of the historic Ornette Coleman Quartet to each other and the rest is 'free jazz' history. Mr Bley is also one of those responsible for freeing jazz from a pulse, for which he and other leaders will forever be praised by some and blamed by others. Also looked at is Bley's unique approach to solo, duo, and trio configurations; the art of improvisation with such interesting approaches as "stopping time" and "silence", as well as his involvement with musicians such as Lester Young, Chet Baker, Charles Mingus, Jimmy Guiffre, George Russell, Bill Evans, and Sonny Rollins. For a free read that combines two ares that I am interested in (genetics and horses), I found this book to be a great explanation on the different coat colors and how they are expressed. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it was easy to understand and learned a lot about the subject.

Kincaid's third novel (after Annie John) is presented as the mesmerizing, harrowing, richly metaphorical autobiography of 70-year-old Xuela Claudette Richardson. Earthy, intractably antisocial, acridly introspective, morbidly obsessed with history and identity, conquest and colonialism, language and silence, Xuela recounts her life on the island of Dominica in the West Indies. In Kincaid's characteristically lucid, singsong prose, Xuela traces her evolution from a young girl to an old woman while interrogating the mysteries of her hybrid cultural origins and her parents, who failed to be parents: her mother died during childbirth; her often absent father, a cruel and petty island official, cultivates a veneer of respectability ("another skin over his real skin"), rendering him unrecognizable to his daughter. I loved this book

I have to speak up, because I feel that this book is being unfairly trashed. I stumbled across one of the chapters of this book in a collection, and I was so taken aback that I had to rush out and get the complete novel. I think that that Jamaica Kincaid's writing is so beautiful and poetic that she could be writing about anything and I would read it. But she also tells a very interesting and important story. Xuela is a mixed-race, motherless girl who does not receive love from anyone, and must survive by loving and celebrating her self. Perhaps for those people who have always felt secure in their place in life, and surrounded by love on all sides, Kincaid's book is too harsh and hard to relate to. But for those of us who have had times we when we felt so alone that we literally had to become our own mother and/or our own best friend, Kincaid's novel is a testimony to our experience. A great book.

Controversial, disturbing, not for everyone.

Having read this title while vacationing in Jamaica, (even though placed in Dominica and the author grew up in Atigua)I was entirely able to understand Xuela. Many children are born out of wedlock, though the fathers still are involved with their children. Xuela is an extreme, but not implausible, case of emotional detachment. Everything in the book, from her father's corruption, to encountering the stevedore during a downpour came to life in my reading experience. Be forewarned, Xuela is not a likeable character, and her physical self-love may be offensive to some readers. But Jamaica Kincaid's blunt and honest portrayal of a hardened woman is undeniably hard to forget.

pretty writing - imagery not meant to be pretty

I think more readers should read this in context of Jamaica Kincaid's own personal life, especially regarding her torn relationship with her mother. It would then become extremely touching, as Kincaid really writes this to save her own living. While other reviewers have found this book to be harsh or dirty in some sense, we should gain the sense that this narrator is really at a loss for love, that there is so little to love, but was able to find love in herself.

The best!

If you are entering the field of neurodiagnostics with specialty in EEG, this is by far the most helpful book I've encountered. I have bought many EEG books and you cannot get any better than this one, especially if you are a student.

Sweet!

Full of lots of teenaged angst, Giving Up the V is a very realistic depiction of the struggles teens have these days regarding sex. Should they? Shouldn't they? It's more than just a yes or no answer involved, and Robar nails it in the funniest, yet sweetest way.

While many of her peers are already having sex (or want to), Spencer isn't sure she's ready. When ensues is a fun comedy about making a decision that will affect you for the rest of your life. Snappy, realistic dialogue, and humor are Robar's strengths, and they shine.

Teens will love this book... and probably see a lot of themselves and their friends in the characters. Very enjoyable!

How can you not like a story that starts off with the main character having to endure her first gynecological exam because she has a forward-thinking mother?

Spencer is the last girl that needs a prescription for the Pill. She has never had a serious crush on a boy in all of her sixteen years. But her mother wants Spencer to be prepared. She's not giving her carte blanche to be promiscuous, but she wants Spencer covered if hormones override common sense.

Spencer's medication is the talk of her group of friends, the Crew. The guys in the group all offer to be her first.

Spencer has always been the girl her friends confide in. Her tight group of friends include Ryan, the player; Morgan and Justin, the on-again/off-again/on-again rocking couple; her best friend, Alyssa, who is so petite she looks like she is only twelve; and good old Zach. It isn't until Spencer lays eyes on the new transfer student, Ben, that she even considers putting her pills to good use.

But problems ensue when Alyssa shares her list of possible boys to lose her virginity to with Spencer. Spencer hasn't told anyone about her crush on Ben (and she's getting the vibe that Ben is into her as well), and she's conflicted when she sees Ben has made it to #1 on Alyssa's list. She's torn between keeping her friend happy and following her own desires.

It doesn't help when her friend Zach starts keeping his distance from her. Though he assures her that everything is okay, Spencer isn't so sure. And she's also confused when she realizes that Zach has started to sport some well-defined muscles of his own.

I really enjoyed GIVING UP THE V from start to finish. Spencer could be any teenage girl struggling with the emotions of her first crush. She's flattered that she's captured his attention, but then uncomfortable with his fast moves. There's girl drama, romance, and amusing situations that the characters find themselves in. Some of the most entertaining parts are Justin's attempts to win Morgan back in their up and down romance.

The story doesn't promote sexual activity even though the title may suggest otherwise. It's a good look at the pros and cons of going all the way the first time.

So Similar!

Upon reading the first three pages of the book I instantly knew I wanted to finish the whole thing. I purchased it on my kindle and finished the book a day later. It was great the main character Spencer is witty and smart. She's compasionate and caring. The Situations were something you could actually see happening and were both painful and hilariousme it was realistic and charming.
Spencer is a 16 year old girl whose mother puts her on the pill, just to be prepared. Spencer feels like she wants to wait for someone she loves while her best friend Alyssa wants to get it over with. Spencer sticks with her decision until a new boy comes to school. Hes Handsome and seems to like her but shes not sure if shes willing to go through with everything. Its interesting whats happens albeit a tad predictable.

This book strongly reminded me of a book I loved when I was younger called Just as long as were together by Judy Blume. Spencer reminded me of the main character Steph in that story who was struggling with balancing her home life, friends and her body issues same as Spencer, Stephs best friend is an Asian girl Alison while Spencers best friend was an Asian girl names Alyssa. The two character to me seem to blend into one and I started to see Giving up the V almost as an what happened next in the Judy Blume story.

Some of the downsides were that the plot was very predicatable and (IMO) borrowed some from 10 things I hate about you. Some of the friendships seemed strange, example the goth girl, dumb jock and science geek were all friends. There was also the token mean popular girl.

Besides from the sterotypes this book was really great and fun to read. I enjoyed it a lot.
