Review

'Written by outstanding academics well-recognized for their expertise on the topic, this long-awaited book is a must have to anybody embarking on the process of global sourcing or seeking to enhance their existing knowledge. It provides a comprehensive conceptual overview of three crucial aspects of global sourcing - strategy, governance, and daily management - supplemented by well-researched case studies and lively examples.' - Professor Natalia Levina, NYU Stern School of Business

'In a truly globalized world, customers are looking not just at delivery excellence from service providers, but also global execution capabilities. Outsourcing providers need to look beyond standardized services to include innovation and transformation capabilities, embedded into their offering. This requires providers to focus on the customer's business, understand the issues and then provide solutions. This book provides a very good customer-centric view of how providers need to approach the market.' - Girish Ramachandran, Corporate Director - Strategic Business, Tata Consultancy Services

'Outsourcing and offshoring are commonplace terms, but they're often poorly understood and inexpertly practiced. Yet there is much 'out' left in 'sourcing,' and even more 'off' ahead of us in 'shoring.' The Handbook of Global Outsourcing and Offshoring is an intelligent user's manual essential reading for those starting out as well as those who find they may have strayed off course.' - Dr. John Hindle, Senior Manager, Global Marketing, Accenture

'Out of sight but not out of mind' could well be the motto of this book. It is a 'must read' for those studying the global phenomenon and in managing outsourcing relationships. The frustrations and rising costs experienced by many can and need to be avoided. The Handbook of Global Outsourcing and Offshoring goes a long way in providing insights drawn from real-world experience in reducing the risks.' - Professor Robert D. Galliers, Provost, Bentley College.

'Sourcing optimization is a key strategic lever being deployed by global corporations as they adapt to the challenging business and economic climate. Sourcing practitioners will find this book a useful guide in terms of avoiding the common pitfalls that impact the success of such initiatives. The examples used in the book are free of jargon, drawn from real-life situations and easy to relate to.' - Srikanth Iyengar, Associate Vice President,Global Head of Business Development - SGS, Infosys Technologies Limited

'The Handbook of Global Outsourcing and Offshoring is outstanding. It is both insightful and practical. It is useful for companies that are considering outsourcing as a growth strategy as well as those that set out to provide high quality outsourcing services to its clients globally.' - John Peng, Sr. Vice President, Global Strategic Account iSoftStone Information Service Corp

'The Handbook of Global Outsourcing and Offshoring provides a broad and in-depth understanding of outsourcing from the client perspective. From the early days of outsourcing, client and provider companies alike have made innumerable mistakes. This handbook provides valuable guidance about what it takes to avoid the pitfalls and outsource successfully. This should be a required reference for any company considering outsourcing.' - Wendell O. Jones, Outsourcing pioneer and thought leader

Easy to read and up-to-date
By Michael Merker
If you're looking for a book to give you some current perspectives and some prescriptive advice on offshoring, then this book will help. The case studies show that these types of arrangements have various complexities involved and that offshoring doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing venture. Easy to read, reasonably comprehensive for a short book, and very current.

Soldiers for Sale: German

A fascinating study that uncovers an important aspect of the history of the American Revolution, this accountreveals how the British Army that fought the American Revolutionaries was, in fact, an Anglo-German army. Arguing that the British Crown had doubts about the willingness of English soldiers to fight against other English-speaking people in North America, the bookdetails how the task of providing troops fell upon the princes of German States, who were relatives of England’s ruling family. In return for large amounts of money, German princes and barons provided about 30,000 soldiers, many of whom were dragged unwillingly from their families and sent to fight in a war in which they had no interest. While some of the soldiers eventually melted into the French and English-speaking societies of Canada, little history has been available, not even tothe descendant families. These soldiers' experiences offer new insight into the battles that took place between 1776 and 1783 and had an impact that spanned four countries.

An Innovative Look at the "Hessians" of Patriotic Folklore
By A. A. Nofi
An excerpt from the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'While his aim is throw fresh light on the German troops in the Crown's service during the American Revolution, in Soldiers for Sale historian Wilhelmy also manages to give the reader a fresh slant on the war from the Canadian perspective. As he points out, technically the German troops serving the British in North America were not "mercenaries", but rather heavily subsidized "allies". Wilhelmy discusses British efforts to recruit these troops, the nature of the German states in the "troops for hire" business, the contracts under which various princelings agreed to provide troops (who were often pressed men), their service in the war, not only on the Canadian front, but elsewhere as well, and the consequences of that service. Along the way Wilhelmy covers numbers, organization, battles, costs and payments (including a brutally callous dunning letter from one German prince to the British government), casualties, desertions, and more, supplemented by a wealth of technical and statistical information.'

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag: Blackbeard: The Lost Journal, by Christie Golden

Delve into the world of Ubisoft’s latest installment in the acclaimed Assassin’s Creed series with this fascinating glimpse of one of history’s most storied legends: Edward Thatch, otherwise known as the infamous pirate captain Blackbeard.

Few moments in history have proven as timelessly fascinating as the lawless Golden Age of Piracy, which was largely played out in the Caribbean of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. In this time of rebellion, fortune, intrigue, and adventure, Blackbeard stands as one of the most fearsome captains to have ever sailed the seas. Now, as the latest historical figure to take center stage in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Blackbeard joins the ranks of Edward Kenway—father of Haytham Kenway and grandfather of Connor—as they navigate troubled island waters and carve out their destinies. Thoughtfully crafted to resemble an authentic pirate artifact, this illustrated journal delivers a unique insider’s view into the world of the game through fascinating entries that provide a firsthand account of the day-to-day lives of the characters. This one-of-a-kind graphic novel — featuring beautifully etched illustrations and portraits, a wanted poster, removable Letter of Marque, torn pages ripped out by Blackbeard himself, and more — brings the bold worlds of Blackbeard and Kenway strikingly to life.

Review
“Like [Blackbeard] himself, the book is full of history, tall tale, and full-to-bursting with charm… I really enjoyed the authenticity that Golden put into her work… Even amongst the hyper-glossy higher-production valued art books, there is a great deal of filler or dead space. Not so in this piece. Part art book and part fictional journal, Blackbeard: The Lost Journal should be welcome in any collector’s pile of treasure.”
—Gaming Trend

“The book easily stands on its own as a fascinating graphic novel, with beautiful illustrations and lots of fun removable extras, such as a wanted poster, playing cards, a map, letters and more.”
—Wink Books

"…Blackbeard: The Lost Journal portrays Edward Thatch in such a human way and does an excellent job filling some holes in the story of the game, we'll still reward this book, that looks like it's straight from the game, with the maximum score."
—Meer dan Games

“…a surprisingly beautiful (and in some ways historically accurate) work…Readers do not have to have played or even seen the related Assassin’s Creed game to enjoy this book, but it should also be a much treasured piece in the collection of those who love the game as well.”

Q&A with Author Christie Golden

Award-winning and seven-time New York Times best-selling author Christie Golden has written over forty novels and several short stories in the fields of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Among her many projects are over a dozen Star Trek novels, nearly a dozen Blizzard World of Warcraft and StarCraft novels, and three books in the nine-book Star Wars series, Fate of the Jedi, which she co-wrote with authors Aaron Allston and Troy Denning. Her latest book, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag™: Blackbeard: The Lost Journal, hits shelves on March 4, 2014.

We asked Golden questions about her incredibly impressive career thus far, her new Assassin’s Creed book, and what she sees on the horizon:

1. You launched the TSR Ravenloft line with your first novel, Vampire of the Mists, in 1991. What inspired you to start writing fantasy? How did you break into the publishing world?

I’d been creating stories ever since I was old enough to hold a crayon and started my first serious attempt at writing a fantasy novel in high school. In my mid-twenties, I had been on the editing staff of magazines and gotten on the open audition mailing list of TSR, who gave the world Dungeons & Dragons. I gave it a shot at one point and was not successful. The next chance I got, I tried again—and I was chosen! I’d submitted an outline and a first chapter based on a rough idea they had presented, and next thing I knew, I had to write my first book . . . in three months! Baptism by fire, for sure!

2. What has been your favorite series or property to work on?

Oh my, oh my, that’s like asking which of my children I love best! I’ve been so fortunate in that I’ve worked in so many different worlds. Each one has had something wonderful to teach me and has been a valuable experience. How about I say why I love a few in particular? I love Ravenloft, because I got to create Jander Sunstar—perhaps my best-loved character by readers. I love Star Trek, because it was the first science fiction show I ever watched when I was a child. I love Star Wars, because it took me by the heart when I was thirteen and didn’t let go. I love Invasion: America, because it gave me the chance to work with Harve Bennett, who paid me the ultimate compliment when he said on a phone call, “You know what you’re doing.” I love all of Blizzard’s properties, because I’ve been with them so long and the blending between game and novel is so fluid, and they’re super to work with. I love Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag™ because Ubisoft really does their homework on history, and well—who wouldn’t be thrilled to write Blackbeard’s Journal? As for my favorite world to write in . . . I have to say, my own!

3. Where can fans expect to meet you next? Any book signings or appearances in the future?

I am a fixture at Colorado’s StarFest, where I will be selling and signing books on May 2–4 at the Marriott in the Denver Tech Center. I’m hoping to be a guest at Wyrd Con, May 22–26, at the Westin LAX. We’re still waiting on the results of a Kickstarter before I can confirm I’ll be attending. I am also a regular at BlizzCon, but I have no details to share as to when—if it’s happening, which I hope it is!—it will be this year.

You can follow me on Twitter @ChristieGolden, on Facebook, and at my website at www.christiegolden.com. (I am going to try to be better at keeping it updated!) I hope to do more signings this year with two exciting projects out, and my Twitter is where I’ll be posting the latest info.

4. Do you have any advice for gamers who want to write?

It’s nearly impossible to break into any sort of media fiction if you don’t already have publishing credits. That’s because it’s very deadline driven, and the companies and publishers want someone who has already demonstrated they can handle that sort of thing. What you can do to start getting that “track record” is look into getting your own original fiction out there in reputable markets. A great resource is www.writerbeware.org.

5. What’s next for you?

My next immediate project is doing a novel for Cryptozoic’s forthcoming HEX MMO trading card game. It’s exciting to be helping create so much of this world, as it is all so new. Then I’m doing another project for Blizzard, and in my copious spare time, I am working on seeing if I can’t get some original works published as well. I’m certainly busy, and I couldn’t be happier about that!

The Yarenest Book About the Yarenest Pyrate
By TL Stearns
This is a tome of impressive structure. It's pages are rife with a fictional account of Blackbeard's tales as told by the man himself to his "official" scribe. The book is set in-universe to Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, but is an excellent standalone book on its own, whether you're a pirate fan or an Assassin's Creed fan, or both.

The hardcover book is full color and beautifully illustrated. It has many fine little interactive inserts, letters, and maps to look through, and the details will amaze you. It is a work of art and extremely fun to read.

The author, Christie Golden, is known for writing tie-in novels for many fandoms including Star Wars, Star Trek, World of Warcraft, as well an impressive collection of her own original fiction, but this book goes beyond "novel" and approaches "experience." It is definitely a treasure worth acquiring.

Get it. Ye won't be disappointed. Yar.

this is an excellent narrative tie-in to the Assassin's Creed mythos
By Scott Burke
Full disclosure: I am a personal friend (over 20 years) of author Christie Golden.

Having said that, this is an excellent narrative tie-in to the Assassin's Creed mythos. The text has a fantastic flavor of the period, and draws the reader in, whether for short visits or a cover-to-cover marathon.

The piecemeal fashion in which human factors research has been conducted in the maritime domain makes information retrieval available only by scanning through numerous research journals and conference papers. Bringing together human factors information from this and other domains, Human Factors in the Maritime Domain integrates a common body of knowledge into one single volume.

The book provides the vital background information necessary to acquire a core knowledge base and a much-needed overview of human factors within the maritime domain. It starts by putting the topic into an historical and theoretical context, moves onto more specific and detailed topics and contemporary thinking in human factors, then reviews new maritime technology. The authors take a holistic approach based on a model of the socio-technical system of work in the maritime domain. They synthesize available knowledge and research, then present in an easily acceptable framework with example, illustrations, and case studies whenever possible, making the text rigorous, useful, and enjoyable.

The three authors draw on a range of diverse backgrounds including working as a maritime surveyor, transport consultant, human factors lecturer, and mechanical engineer. They have undertaken maritime research in Denmark, Australia, Malta, and the UK. They have published several other human factor books on related topics. This combination of human factors knowledge, maritime wisdom, and substantial publication experience results in a book that is effective and practical.

A Shamanic Kundalini Awakening, by Brendan Ring

Born from a deep sense of separation, the trajectory of transformation runs like a golden thread, through this visionary and mystical journey of reconnection to Source via kundalini awakening and shamanic initiation.

This deeply personal journey of Kundalini awakening is a reflection of all the glory and gory bits of the process. I love the raw sharing Brendan offers in this work. This initiatory process, familiar to Shamans and Yogis, takes everything from us that is not serving to elevate our souls, and is so often painful. I enjoyed this book immensely, and identified with so much of what Brendan has shared. I recommend this read either as encouragement to those drawn to walking the path of self-realization, or as disillusionment for those who imagine it to require anything less than the death of unconscious living, and rebirth into awakened reality.
Dawn Dancing Otter (Teacher of Shamanic Arts)

There is much to contemplate and learn in Brendan Ring's 'A Shamanic Kundalini Awakening.' If the way of the Shaman is calling you, then surely Brendan's profound reflections and the Wisdom Knowledge gained from his personal deep journey experiences will be of help to you and enhance your quest for Truth.

Re-connection with the universe
By S. Ferguson
Brendan Ring is recognized as a brilliant accomplished musician — and he is also a visionary. To say that he is a visionary is a vast understatement! Reading this book will quickly open for you the doors into the mysterious world of wonders he is privileged to experience on his way Home to our Source. I have complete trust and faith in Brendan. He is a man with a good heart. I don't follow the Shamanic Way myself, and honestly don't know much about it, even though I have respected friends who are deeply involved in Shamanism. Therefore I have learned a great deal from Brendan's book — and since my way is the sacred Sanskrit, more in resonance with the Vedic traditions, his connecting these two paths is particularly interesting to me, enlightening and fun.

As Brendan says this book is the story of his journey from separation, to re-connection with the universe. This re-connection is essentially the only true purpose for life and the reason the Woven Universe was created in the first place. Thus we all can benefit from the trail markings Brendan has carved out for us as he explains the mechanics, purposes of, and his actual experiences with Kundalini. He seems to have been able to handle and constructively assimilate all his extraordinary visionary experiences, which have made his life an awesome and somewhat enviable mystical journey.

My own personal interpretation of visions is to think of them as waves, waveforms, waveforms of innumerable frequencies that coagulate and take familiar forms according to our personal lens, expressing in symbols the subtle nuances of our experiential journey through the Myriad Realms. As Brendan says, these visions are the helping spirits that are the extensions and literally aspects of the One. Ultimately there is only the One. We are That, everyone and everything in this universe is That One. In this very fundamental idea, there is no disagreement between Shamanism and the ancient Vedic traditions. I like the say that Hinduism per se does not exist, for in the various numerous Sanskrit schools that emerged over thousands of years, there are perhaps as many ways to reconnect and unite with God as there are individuals in India!

Brendan's realization of a devotion to Shiva discovered on ayahuasca was heart warming for me. One of my primary influences has been Kashmir Shaivism and the Shiva Sutras. I agree that Shiva can certainly be understood as a super-shaman. Shiva wears snakes as ornaments and drinks from human skulls. Shiva drank the poison, which emerged from churning the ocean in order to protect life on earth. One aspect of Shiva is as cosmic ecologist. Brendan tells us that the presence of shamans "allows for balance and enriches the spiritual ecosystem, they are in a sense spiritual ecologists par excellence."

In chapter Eleven, Brendan talks about our DNA and quotes an important book 'The Cosmic Serpent' by Jeremy Narby: "...the peoples who practice what we call 'shamanism' communicate with DNA." Brendan gives his enlightened intelligent insights into our ever-changing serpent-like photon-emitting DNA within the eternal unchanging consciousness. Brendan's Wisdom Knowledge is always supported and illustrated by the most beautiful dreams and visions, including outer space, other planets and star systems. Surely anyone who has experienced even a taste of the genuine interface and union with God will find everything else pale and insipid by comparison. Embracing the One is the real thing.

Brendan quotes the wisdom of Black Elk, which he feels is equal to the Bhagavad Gita: ‘The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness, with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the centre of the universe dwells Wakan-Tanka, and that this centre is really everywhere, it is within each of us.’ This is the perfectly accurate description of the Sanskrit ubiquitous One, which as Black Elk says is the 'centre' of everything and everyone, pervading All — and simultaneously dwells in the Heart of each of us.

Brendan understands all too well how conflicted and perilous our world is. He says "...the main problems affecting the world today are the product of western culture and change must come from within that culture if we are to return to any form of balanced state on this planet. This is why shamanic people are appearing in the west. Perhaps they will act like a spiritual virus destroying the system from within. ...A true spiritual awakening automatically changes the way the individual acts in the world."

There is much to contemplate and learn in Brendan Ring's 'A Shamanic Kundalini Awakning.' If the way of the Shaman is calling you, then surely Brendan's profound reflections and the Wisdom Knowledge gained from his personal deep journey experiences will be of help to you and enhance your quest for Truth. I am honored to have Brendan as a friend. He is a very special rare being, with a keen gentle intelligence, and great sensitivity to subtle sound as his lovely pristine music clearly shows. He sums up the beauty of his book in this quote: "I then realise that I have been given all the keys I need and that whether I take the way of yoga straight across the field, or the shamanic path through the woods, I am going HOME." Yes, Home!

A personal journey that's nothing short of amazing!
By mrsweav
This book is filled with amazingly detailed and profound experiences. I enjoyed the knowledge as well, that lent a hand in the thought process of the Author. It's not often that we get to experience such clarity from an individual regarding their experiences. To share dreams and visions is such a vulnerable act, that it is a true privilege to have been able to read it.

On a personal note, my own experiences have been so similar to the ones expressed in this book that by reading it, I was able to not only validate my own experiences but truly feel that sense of oneness.

New Human Horizons - Told From A Poet's Heart
By Art H.
It’s a rare treat when you stumble across deep-level insights into shamanic explorations, especially where so many similar works convey only a neophyte’s anecdotal account. It’s equally rare to turn up masterful kundalini understandings, when others offer little more than a shallow pretense to genuine knowledge of this little-known subject.

So pour, “A Shamanic Kundalini Awakening” into your heart and mind. It’s a doubly rare vintage, to be savored slowly and linger appreciatively. Setting upon Mr. Ring’s book of magnificent horizons will leave the reader without any doubt that he has entered that relatively unexplored area of excellent literary works deserving of the warning, “Here be dragons.” All of this, told, as it is, from the standpoint of an honest mystical adventurer from the Western world should be much appreciated by any reader of similar intent.

Really Big and Heavy
By Jayah
The book arrived within a reasonable amount of time and was in excellent condition. However, to say that I was surprised upon receiving this would be an understatement; the book was HUGE and HEAVY! Chugging it to and back from campus to the dorms (about 1 mile or so) was a pretty daunting task to say the least. Also, the pages were so thin and fragile and the text was incredibly small. The benefit, however, is that some of the words are defined at the bottom of the page. If this will be staying on your bookshelf and you are a fan of Shakespeare, then by all means buy it. But if you are a student, I would not advise spending a couple of hundred dollars on a book you will be barely using--especially when you can just purchase the plays individually.

Missionary Capitalist: Nelson Rockefeller in Venezuela, by Darlene Rivas

The first work to draw on Nelson A. Rockefeller's newly available personal papers as well as research in Latin American archives, Missionary Capitalist details Rockefeller's efforts to promote economic development in Latin America, particularly Venezuela, from the late 1930s through the 1950s.

Rockefeller's involvement in the region began in 1936 with his investment in Creole Petroleum, the Venezuelan subsidiary of Standard Oil. Almost immediately, he began trying to influence North Americans' individual, corporate, and government relationships with Latin Americans. Through his work developing technical assistance programs for the Roosevelt administration during World War II, his business ventures (primarily agricultural production and food retailing), and his postwar founding of the nonprofit American International Association, Rockefeller hoped to demonstrate how U.S. capitalists could nurture entrepreneurial spirit and work successfully with government agencies in Latin America to encourage economic development and improve U.S.-Latin American relations. Ultimately, however, he overestimated the ability of the United States, through public or private endeavors, to promote Latin American economic, political, and social change.

This objective account paints a portrait of Rockefeller not as the rapacious, exploitative figure of stereotype, but as a man fueled by idealism and humanitarian concern as well as ambition.

Rivas challenges our assumptions about the relationship of U.S. capital to Latin America in the postwar period. Anyone interested in Yankee imperialism or the spread of U.S. economic ideals must read this fine book. [A] carefully researched, well-written book . . . Rivas's work makes a strong contribution to a much needed historicization of development and raises important questions about the way it was contested and negotiated in diverse contexts.--American Historical Review

A solid, archive-based assessment of Nelson Rockefeller's efforts to promote economic development in Venezuela. . . . This fascinating account strips away the many stereotypes to provide a more nuanced view of Rockefeller's enthusiasm.--Foreign Affairs

In the America of the fifties, enthusiasm for capitalism reached new heights, as the postwar boom brought newfound wealth and leisure to the middle classes. Darlene Rivas shows how Nelson Rockefeller, an advocate of people's capitalism at home and abroad, sought to spur a similar enthusiasm--bolstered by comparable economic accomplishments--in Latin America. In doing so, Rivas challenges our assumptions about the relationship of U.S. capital to Latin America in the postwar period. Anyone interested in Yankee imperialism or the spread of U.S. economic ideals must read this fine book.--Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman, San Diego State University

[Rivas] makes a solid case for viewing Rockefeller as emblematic of a persuasive world view in U.S. foreign policy.--Journal of American History

A strong contribution to our understanding of the intricacies of U.S.-Latin American relations.--Business History Review

The Missing Piece In The Venezuelan History Puzzle
By Tomas Sancio
Read this book after reading Titan (about Nelson's famous grandfather, John D.) to see what the grandson of a legend would do with his money and hunger for getting out of the legendary oilman's shadow. So he came to Venezuela and made a pretty substantial effort to kickstart our inexistent economy. But he hit a wall as Venezuela transitioned from a nascent democracy into one more affected by the sweeping Latin American leftism and anti-Americanism. Very grateful with Darlene to have written this wonderful (cautionary) tale about doing business involving a significant cultural divide.

NR and his family were benefactors, probably the greatest in Venezuelan history. If you want to know what it was like in Venezuela back then, you ought to read this book.
When I was in Venezuela,my Dad often spoke of them,in almost reverent terms. As far as he was concerned, they were saints of the highest caliber.
VOB's,read this book!
